Wet and Wild Weekend for Chambers Racing at Whitby Revo MXGB

This weekend the Chambers Racing team headed to the seaside track of Whitby for the next round of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels. On Saturday, the track was dry and hard pack, but heavy overnight rain saw the track on Sunday very wet and muddy and produced a tricky and technical days racing.

Sunday morning saw the riders head out on track for the qualifying sessions and in the MX1 class, Glenn McCormick quickly settled into the track and went fastest with an early fast lap and managed to secure Pole Position by over half a second for the first time in his Pro career. In the MX2 class, Tom Grimshaw finished the session in 6th, with Alfie Jones in 12th and Ben Franklin 16th. In the Youth 250cc class on Saturday Harvey Cashmore finished 8th fastest.

The opening MX1 race saw Glenn make a good jump out of the gate and was pushing for the holeshot when he lost the front end on the first corner and went down. Glenn quickly remounted and charged through the pack to the edge of the top 10 by mid-race distance. As the race ended Glenn lost a position and finished 12th.

After the drama of the opening race, Glenn was hoping for a better start in the second moto but after spinning out of the gate Glenn rounded the first corner mid-pack. Glenn quickly started to move forward and got up to 11th before finishing 13th to claim 13th overall.

The opening MX2 class race saw Tom make a good jump out of the gate but spun on the grass and then collided with a fallen rider in the first turn, while both Alfie and Ben were inside the top 15. After remounting Tom pushed forward into 15th before another crash pushed him back down the order and saw him recover to 15th at the flag. For Alfie, it was a tough race after he crashed twice and crossed the line in 17th, while Ben suffered a DNF after damaging his bike in a crash.

The final MX2 race saw Tom make a better start and avoid the second turn crash and was in 7th with Alfie in 13th and Ben just outside the top 20. Tom rode a strong race and picked his way up to 3rd place towards the end of the moto, before losing a position on the last lap to finish 4th. Alfie suffered another tough moto after crashing on the opening lap and struggling to restart the bike and came back to 21st at the flag. For Ben, it was a long and challenging moto with small mistakes that saw him finish in 19th place.

After the two motos Tom finished 11th overall, Alfie claimed 18th overall and Ben ended the day in 21st overall.

Glenn McCormick – The day started well with going P1 in qualifying and it was a bit overwhelming as my best result before was a 7th or 8th. I was feeling good coming into this weekend as I enjoy this track and was feeling good straightway. In the first race I got a good start and was on for the holeshot when I tucked the front and went down and in these conditions, it was hard to come from behind, but I got back to 12th. In the second race, I was looking for a better result but overcooked the start and spun off the grid and was mid-pack and had a few good laps early on but faded at the end of the moto as I’ve been sick recently and lacking on energy so to be here and go P1 and score points is a positive.

Tom Grimshaw – The weekend started well in qualifying, I was enjoying the technical conditions and then in the first race, I got a good jump off the grid but spun on the grass and in the first turn everyone managed to avoid the fallen rider apart from me and I went down. Then I was coming through, but the track had one dry line and I tried to make a move and went down and finished 15th. In the second race, I was fired up and got a good start and avoided the crash on the second turn and pushed my way up to third and was looking to bring it home on the final lap when another rider came up my inside and took the position on the last lap and I am gutted to have lost third like that.

Alfie Jones – Qualifying started well with 13th and in race one, I got a good start, but the roost was heavy, and I lost my goggles, so I had to pit for a fresh pair and was 25th and got back 15th before my goggles jammed and I slipped to 17th at the finish. In the second race I crashed on the second lap and the bike would not restart straightway, from there I just rode it home to the finish but was outside the points.

Ben Franklin – It has been a tough day for me, qualifying was ok in 16th and the track was very wet and tricky. In the first race I got a good start, got up to 12th, had a small tip-over, got back going, and then had another crash and bent the bike, so I pulled out. In the second race, I made an ok start and was in 15th before I had a small crash and then came back to 19th at the finish.

Harvey Cashmore – It was an ok weekend and I managed to get 7th in qualifying. In the first race, I had an ok start and was mid-pack and worked my way into the top 6 but halfway through the race I made a little mistake and dropped to 8th. In the second race, I had a good start and was lying second and dropped to 8th as I could not get a rhythm going. Sunday, we had a lot of overnight rain which meant it was very wet in the third race and I didn’t have the best of starts and pulled through but crashed and had to come in for goggles and finished 7th in the 250’s. In the last race, I was about mid-pack and had two crashes and had to take my goggles off and finished 7th in the 250’s.

Tim Chambers – It has been a bit of a wet, foggy, and strange weekend with a mixed bag of results for all the riders. It was great to see Glenn get Pole Position in the MX1 class, but then in the first race, he almost holeshot it but went down and came back to 12th. In the second race, he had a bad start and finished 13th. In the MX2 class, all three riders crashed at some point in the first race and then Tom got a strong fourth in the second race and all three have scored points today. Harvey had a steady weekend of results in the Youth 250 class and overall, it has been a bit of an ‘Up and Down’ weekend on a very wet day where the weather played its part in the results.
