Another great turn out of youth riders gathered at Thorp Perow at the weekend for round 4 of the Pinpoint Recruitment Northern Youth Enduro Championship sponsored by TCR Garage, and with all things considered, jubilees, school holidays, bank holidays… there was still a great lineup of 70 riders across the classes.
Report by Gary Nicolson
First out after the practice session were the Autos, 65s and Small wheel 85s, for a 1.5 hour race with the 85 Small Wheels taking on the clear woodland ahead for the first lap.
Taking the holeshot was the is in form 10 year old from the Isle of Man Jacob Wilson with a sterling performance to the checkered flag gaining a lap on 2nd place Theo Nicholson who came 2nd to a couple of tree fights as well to arrive home runner up on the day. 3rd place was Billy Chambers who had his own problems with a stick caught in his chain slider making his bike bog and stall until we pushed him to the pits and hammered it out with a screwdriver. Character building is the name of the game in enduro and when it doesn’t go to plan these kids have to deal with the disappointment; brush themselves down and get on with it, and that was shown at its finest with young Jack Wall whose bike wouldn’t start on the line then he bounced off a tree and bent his bike, all in lap one, but he showed maturity and got back in the race to put in some great lap times only one second down on the fastest lap of the class set by Jacob.
Next off the line were the 65s with Dexter Hind taking the holeshot showing he meant business as he leads the championship, but with his big pal Juddy Kearford making his debut in the NYEC championship that was never going to be easy with Juddy waiting to pounce if a mistake happened with both riders lapping under ten minutes. This was going to be a race to the flag that was worth watching. Dexter had a little tumble in lap three and Juddy took the lead, unfortunately, Juddy had to retire with bike issues and the neutral spectator lost out on a mouth-watering battle between these two young high fliers where Dexter took the win, extending his lead with a 100% winning record. Jenson Fox put in a dazzling display of skills to finish runner up on 9 laps only a few minutes behind with the 3rd place podium finish, and his third podium in a row going to Elliot Tennant.
Now came the Autos with a smaller entry than booked in, they had to take on a shorter lap but a challenging enduro course weaving through the woodland ruts, roots and nettle lined single track to force them to keep on track and out of the rough tree stumped undergrowth. Arron Wark completed the over ten-minute lap first, setting the fastest Lap time of the class to take the win, and gaining one additional lap on 2nd placed Ethan Findlay whose runner up finish showed that it’s all about improving on your previous outings. 3rd place went to Geordie Young gun on his mini 50sx. Harris Walker also finished on 7 Laps to take the last podium spot.
All the riders in these classes are really starting to understand the concept of enduro and the week on week improvements with them all are amazing to see I cannot write about them all but they are all winners.
Race 2 saw the Big Wheel 85s, the 125/150 class and open cc Superteen class line up for a 2-hour session.
First out were the Superteens open cc class, and another Isle of Man rider Bobby Moyer looking to put the disappointment of a DNF behind him from the last round and keep himself and his bike out of trouble but still managed the fastest of the lap just under 8 minutes to take the win. Are there any mainland teenagers prepared to take On The Manx lad? You can join in at any time if you think you are fast enough, runner up on the day was josh lister coming in on 14 laps with a great ride, taking the last podium spot with a steady ride from Joseph Corner
The next away was the 125/150 class Yorkshire’s Riley Boyd was on a mission to extend his lead at the top of the table and keep his clean sheet of wins intact with a class win and 2nd overhaul with consists lap times starting with an 8, a fantastic ride from Jack Ash Bridge earned him a runner up spot on the podium, with the late entry of from the flying Fin Cavanagh taking a well fought out 3rd spot to round of the podium.
Last out but certainly, not least the 85 Big Wheel class getting in shape for life on the full-size bike division on these smaller bikes these boys mean business race faces from the off and when the flag goes down, believe me, they want to race new rider to the championship Jasper Fox didn’t hang around to make his presence known to the regulars knocking in a very impressive 8.11 lap and taking the win in class and a 3rd overhaul, another very impressive ride from Teeside 12-year-old Jack Leonard earned him the runners up spot on the day and a 1st for points in the championship, with Zach Stainthorpe two minutes behind showing that any mistake at this level could be costly.
All in all a fantastic weekend of youth enduro with no major injuries a little break for the summer now returning to action in the first week of September thank you all for supporting this championship the fun and the fury blood sweat and tears are outstanding in all the classes from these young riders
A big thank you to everyone who made this weekend possible
