The Michelin MX Nationals British Motocross Championship executed another finely polished weekend of MX action within the confines of COVID at the weekend at Cusses Gorse MX and further pushed the boundaries of the sport in the UK by live streaming both Saturday nights Phoenix Tools sponsored Straight Rythm and the full Sunday programme of racing.

The Fastest 40 races have been out of the top drawer so far this season and once again both races in this, round three of the 2020 Championship delivered. In qualifying it was the big Par Homes Racefx Husqvarna Russian Evgeny Bobryshev who took pole in MX1, with his teammate and red plate holder Josh Gilbert doing the same in MX2.
Watch our first Post Race Show below
It was ASA United Husqvarna’s Belgian racer Brent Van Doninck who took to the front of the pack on the opening lap of Moto one, but Bobryshev was putting in some quick moves and made the pass on his Husqvarna rival going through the waves, taking the lead before the end of the opening lap. The Russian seemed to be in control of the Moto with a comfortable lead, but Van Doninck went into overdrive in the final half of the race, passing the 777 and pulling out a gap for a comfortable and impressive win. Bobreyshev would finish second ahead of MX1 series leader Tommy Searle, who onboard his Buildbase Honda was riding a controlled race. Reigning MX1 champ Harri Kullas of the Cab Screens Deos Group Honda team suffered a mechanical failure on lap five when running in third ahead of Searle, effectively ending his title defence. Behind Searle the Nation’s favourite privateer Josh Spinks was having a great ride, fending off the challenges of BRT KTM’s Martin Barr for fourth with Barr in fifth. This Moto also saw the title chances of Buildbase Honda’s Jake Nicholls come to an end when he crashed out, injuring his thumb and causing a moto one DNF. Stu Edmonds of Apico Husqvarna has been enjoying his recent trips to Wiltshire and finished a solid seventh, leading home Gabriel Racing KTM’s John Adamson, Chambers Racing Husqvarna’s Jake Millward, Cab Screens Deos Group Honda’s Dan Thornhill and another Gabriel Racing KTM racer Liam Knight in tenth.
All eyes were on the three title contenders in MX2, Gilbert as mentioned earlier, Rob Hooper Racing Yamaha’s Taylor Hammal and Buildbase Honda’s Steven Clarke, and from the start it was Hammal who was the lead MX2 racer. With quite a few 450’s between Hammal and Gilbert, the chance was there for Hammal to steal a march on his rivals, but three laps in his machine would give up the ghost giving Gilbert the lead. Another victim early in the Moto was Clarke who took a tumble, but he would remount and make it up through the pack and into eighth by the end of the race. Gilbert would go on to take an unchallenged win, but behind him, Tom Grimshaw was riding a stormer, and although not on the rear wheel of the winner, he kept in close contact for the majority of the race coming home an excellent second. Estonian Jorgen Talviku of ASA United Husqvarna showed his true potential with a good third ahead of James Carpenter riding his Worx Financial Services Husqvarna in fourth. Joel Rizzi on the Par Homes RaceFX had his best result in the Pro ranks with fifth. Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki racer Carlton Husband, who was suffering from an injured toe after a big crash in the Straight Rhythm was sixth just fending off Glenn McCormick at the line. Clarke, as we said before, was eighth, with Charlie Cole and Callum Mitchell rounding out the top ten.
In Moto two it was Kullas with the holeshot, but Van Doninck was in no mood to mess around, and by the end of the first lap he was tasting fresh air at the head of the field and pulling a gap. Searle and Bobryshev would also make quick work of passing Kullas, and the Russian looked like he had the speed to reel in the leader, but he stalled it while on Searle’s tail meaning he had the hard work of passing Kullas all over again. At the flag, it was Van Doninck with the win and with a 1-1 scorecard he would take the overall. Searle would resist a late attack from Bobryshev to finish the Moto in second, which also gave him the upper hand on the 777 after they tied on points for the overall. So it was Searle second on the box and Bobreyshev third. Behind the top three in the Moto Kullas would take a smooth fourth and Nicholls would ride through the pain barrier for fifth ahead of Spinks, Barr, Thornhill, Edmonds and Jack Brunel of ASA United Husqvarna rounding out the top ten. Spinks by going 4-6 would finish a fantastic fourth overall. Searle now holds a 24 point lead over Van Doninck with Bobryshev two points further back.
Most eyes during Moto 2 were on the MX2 battle between Gilbert and Clarke. The pair were inseparable the whole Moto long and were churning out the laps at such a pace they passed MX1 racers, Nicholls and Spinks, as they duked it out for the win. Gilbert momentarily took the lead at the 3/4 mark of the race, but Clarke was in no mood to relinquish the victory and fought straight back. At the end, though Gilbert’s relentless pressure took its toll on Clarke and he would fall leaving Gilbert to pass the chequers unchallenged for a 1-1 weekend, the overall and an extension on his series lead. Clarke would remount to finish second, while Carpenter took a superb third meaning he would end up second overall taking his first-ever Pro podium overall. McCormick had a late surge and finishing fourth, ahead of Talviku, Chambers Racing Ben Franklin, Grimshaw in sixth coming back from a spill on the opening lap, Cole, Mitchell and Husband. Talviku would flank Gilbert and Carpenter on the podium with Grimshaw getting ever closer to a step on the box in fourth.
With four Moto’s split over the two days, the Gaerne Small Wheel 85’s as always threw up plenty of drama and great racing. On this occasion, Josh Vail was the kid to beat racking up three moto wins for the overall. Winner last time out at Landrake, Reece Jones would finish second with Kalvin Kelly in third. Charlie Richmond had to come through the pack on a number of occasions and would end the weekend in fourth ahead of series leader Ryan Waggott, who would win Moto three in fifth, with Joey Benfield in sixth. A nasty crash in the final Moto for Riley Ward when going over the finish line jump marred the rest of the day’s proceedings, and we wish Riley a speedy recovery!
Charlie Heyman continued his Fly Racing Big Wheel 85 dominance by firing in four Moto wins to keep his unbeaten run going. Wal Beaney got the closest out of anyone to Heyman and would finish second ahead of last years Small Wheel champ Tyla Hooley who moves into second in the series standings. James Barker would end the weekend in fourth, with Finley Evans fifth and Billy Askew sixth.
The first of the 2020 titles were wrapped up in the Talon MXY2 class with ASA United Husqvarna’s Bobby Bruce going through the card again and with over a 100 point lead amassed going into the final round the title is already in the bag for him and his team. Congrats Bobby and ASA United Husqvarna. Behind the Bruce freight train Cab Screens Deos Group racer Joe Brookes nailed his first-ever podium position with a great weekend of racing in second. Ethan Lane came good on Sunday, and his sabbath points haul would land him third, ahead of Charlie Griffiths, Charlie Palmer and Ollie Colmer.
In the Talon MXY2 Louie Kessell made it his second overall of the series, powering to three moto wins in the process. Team Green Kawasaki’s Cullen Scott has kept his title challenge alive with second while Tyler Westcott once again showed he has the speed to win motos at this level by winning the second Moto and coming third overall. Making up the top six were Alfie Jones, Ben Clark, and Connor Mullan in that order.
Joe Clayton would celebrate his elevation to the Phoenix Tools Apico Kawasaki team by winning the Oakley Expert MX1 group taking both Saturday wins and moving him to within 10 points of series leader Shaun Southgate who was third at the weekend behind reigning champ Gav Stevenson in second. Josh Taylor was a contender for the overall, but a moto three DNF ended his chances, though he still managed fourth overall, with Jordan McCaw fifth and Richard Bird.
In the Bell Expert MX2 class Jake Preston held onto the top spot in the standings, but round three had Charlie Putnam’s name all over it and he picked himself up from a moto one fourth to win his remaining three races for the overall ahead of Preston in second and title challenger Ollie Beamish in third. Jack Lindsay had a consistent weekend in fourth with Tomas Hardcastle fifth and Sean Eckersley sixth.
You could write an epic like War and Peace to describe the action in the Pro-Green Amateur MX1 class with the series now nicely poised going into the last round with just 14 points separating the top five. Rob Cross was quick on the draw and fired in with two Moto wins on Saturday, but on Sunday the moto victories went the way of Bradley Maddever and Callum Gordon, and with Cross tasting dirt in the final Moto it would be Maddever with the overall, ahead of Gordon, with Cross having to settle for third. Just one point separates Cross and Maddever heading into Fatcats with Stephen Kelly who finished fourth at the weekend and fifth-placed David Rushton alongside Gordon all with a shot at the title.
Just four points separated the top three in the Pro Green Amateur MX2 and with the moto three victory in his armoury, it would be Kieran Yorke who would gain the win by one point over Aaron Ongley in second and title contender Mitch Young in third. Jack Moore was fourth, with double moto winner Daniel Brough not feeling it on Sunday in fifth. Leon Ongley was sixth while David Finnamore pulled off a fantastic win in the final Moto.
Justin Robinson was at his best in the Moto Connection Clubman MX1, collecting three race victories and the overall over series top two Ryan Osborn and Pete Bulley, who are now separated by just 11 points with one round to go. Alex Christopher finished the weekend in fourth, with James Johnson fifth and ASA United Husqvarna boss Lee Tolan sixth.
Alex Buchanan continued to run riot over the RFX Clubman MX2 class piling in with a full gamut of race wins for the overall and extending his lead at the top of the table to 59 points. Max Flint had a good weekend in second with Connor Warren also making his way to the podium in third. Tallon Aspden who is second in the championship standings was fourth, Ashley Watt fifth, and Ben Wainwright.
The Straight Rhythm sponsored by Phoenix Tools served up some great Saturday evening entertainment, and it was Adam Chatfield who defended his MX1 title successfully, winning the final over Jack Brunel. In MX2 Steven Clarke beat Matt Bayliss to the top spot.
The series reaches its conclusion on the 3rd and 4th October at the Fatcat Motoparc.
