Triple Doune truimph for Mewse! 2023 Scottish Motocross Championship Round 3 – Race Report & Results

Round three of the Scottish Championship was held at one of the country’s top sand tracks. Scott Gardner and Johnny Douglas Hamilton worked their magic to prepare a fantastic-looking event and it was matched by the great line-up of riders. An impressive number of “Champions” made their way to the Doune track and all of them had one eye on the mouth-watering prizes that were on offer.

Auto’s

Shirlaws – KTM Aberdeen Auto Championship saw the biggest entry of the series so far race at Doune. The attraction of the iconic track and the longest race lap of the series so far, meant the youngsters would face their toughest challenge to date. Normal service resumed for Aiden Anton as he led every lap of every race and dominated the day. Ellik Miller had a tough race two but edged out Kohen Bell by a point for second overall. In turn, Kohen also managed to secure the final podium by a point as the top six were all within a few points of each other. Aiden looks to have the championship in the bag, but the chasing pack will keep pushing him all the way.

65’s

FXR Championship continued at Doune and saw Lyall Rutherford turn his 6 second a lap advantage in qualifying into three race wins. The top three would place the same positions in each race with Jackson Ross beating Alex Fraser for second place in each race. The deep sand did see some exciting racing through the field but the top three were untouchable. Alex Fraser has a big lead in the championship but the fight for the top three will be a close one.

85 Small Wheel Start

85’s SW/BW

CiSport sponsor the most exciting racing class. The 85’s always serve up great racing and Doune was the perfect leveller for the hard fought series.

SW

Robbie Scott got the better of Malachi Allan in round three. He qualified ahead of Allan and took two out of the three races leading from the front. Alfie Lawrie’s consistency has been improving as the year goes on and his two thirds made sure he had the final podium. There were a few thrills and spills throughout the field, but it was a great sight for the spectators to follow. It looks like a two horse race in the championship but with only 6 points between Allan and Scott, it’s anyone’s bet who will do enough to win outright.

85 Big Wheel start

BW

With no Lewis Spratt this round, it left the door wide open for Jaden Anderson to capitalise, but Frankie Jobb had other ideas. Anderson may have had the fastest time in qualifying, but Frankie would finish further and further ahead in each race. It was a comfortable second overall for Jaden as the rest of the pack could not catch him. Jaxon Haswell rounded off the top three with the pack not far behind. Jaden Andersons consistency looks like it will secure him the championship this year if he keeps up the pace.

2 Stroke Open/150/Adult Support

Ryan Waggott’s masterclass in sand riding was there for all to marvel at as he disappeared from the rest of the field. Andrew Pohlen would try his best to catch the youngster and was pushed hard by Jack Fletcher in the up to 150cc class.

Kyle Peel ran out overall winner in the open Two stroke race as he beat the Hendry brothers into second and third places with Logan taking bragging rights over Owen.

The Adult Support race was combined with the two classes and South African MX champion Tristan Purdon ran without a transponder and had everyone trackside wondering how fast he was actually riding.

Youth Cup Startline

Saturday 10th June

Youth Rookies Cup (125/250)

One week later but same result. Ryan Waggott rode faultlessly all day as Jack Fletcher did his best to overhaul Waggot. He even led the second race for a few laps but just couldn’t match Waggot’s speed. The combined classes would fight it out for the Scottish Youth Cup as Waggot would run overall winner and take home the silverware.

Youth Cup Start

In the 125’s, Waggott ran out an easy winner ahead of Freddie Gardiner as he would do enough to edge out Louis Perrin-Brown. Lucy Barker was impressive to watch as she pushed for two thirds in first two races but races three ended the push for podium. The 250’s was slightly more straight forward as Fletcher beat Ryan Lowes into second place. Harrison Byers has moved up to the 250f class and enjoyed some success on his new Honda bagging the overall third place.

Vets 40,50 and 60

Mikey Graham stormed to two class wins in the O40’s. Jamie Black and Kevin McBride battled it out for the remaining podium places with McBride winning on count back as the pair shared the spoils in the two races that were run.

The O50’s continued to be dominated by Gordon ‘Montana’ Morrison with Brian Fraser finishing comfortable ahead of Morton Hannah off the top spot. Brian Fraser coasted to a comfortable third place using his experience racing down south to fend off the rest of the pack.

Vets Start

Ian Wilson had a tough day but still came out on top in the O60’s. Kenny McCloy enjoyed riding the big Husky two stoke as he beat Douglas Garrick.

Adult Support

Adult C

Logan Adsley had some stiff competition in the C class at Doune. He could only bag a third as Dylan Dobbie ended up on the same points but was awarded overall second as he beat Logan in the second race. Although Joe Winnard won the first race, his first corner crash in the second race ultimately meant he could not secure the overall as Daniel McDonald rode to victory as the final race was not run due to the meeting being ended with a crash in the MX1 race. Adsley still leads the championship, but McDonald closed the gap to keep things interesting.

Mikey Graham

Adult B

Scot Paterson showed his class again at Doune as he rode from the front in the two races. Logan Ferguson had his best ride of the season but was still edged out by Jake Barker as the pair finished on the same points with Jake having the better record. Paterson has a huge lead in the championship as the opposition fight for the remaining places. Greg Maxwell leads the pack, but it’ll be tough to hang on to second place.

MX1-MX2

MX1 / MX2 Combined Race

The Scottish Motocross Championship continues to attract some top names and ASA United Gas Gas had two of their top riders in attendance. John Adamson and Ivo Monticelli would do their best to spoil Crendon Fasttrack Honda’s Conrad Mewse return to Scotland after his trip up to Drumclog for Round 2. In MX2, the usual suspects would battle it out for top honours to try and beat Phoenix Tools Evenstrokes Kawasaki rider Carlton Husband.

MX2 Safe Access Highland Ltd

Brad Anderson tried his best to throw a spanner in the works by taking a race win but there’s no stopping Carlton Husband at the minute as far as the Scottish Championship is concerned. Carlton had a tough race 2 as he had to fight from a poor start through from 21st to 13th in the race but his 3rd place in the MX2 that race was enough to maintain his perfect score in Scotland. Chambers racing’s Glenn McCormick solid riding put him ahead of Anderson as he finished behind Husband on the podium. Although James Barker enjoyed a third place in the last race, he just couldn’t catch brad for the final podium. His killer whips were impressive but just not enough to beat Brad. Husband does have a healthy lead in the MX2 championship, but I wouldn’t right off Anderson just yet.

Carlton Husband

MX1 Carnegie Fuels

Ivo Monticelli set the pace in qualifying after spending the day riding Stuart Flockhart’s track in Coupar Angus along with teammate John Adamson. Although the pair benefited from the deep sand training the day before, it was not enough to prepare them for Conrad Mewse. Mewse was on fire at Doune. He did have to ride the front runners in each race and Monticelli gave him a hard time but ultimately, he showed his class. Conrad never looked out of control as he eased past the competition to win all three races.

Ivo Monticelli

Current Scottish MX1 champion, Billy MacKenzie did light up the first race with a blistering hole-shot and he managed to run at the front, but he would be overhauled by the young guns. It was a great return to racing for Monticelli as he managed to keep the fast charging john Adamson at bay and take second overall. Adamson had to settle for third on the podium, but you could see he was disappointed not to take the overall being on home soil. As well as MacKenzie, Tony Craig gave a good account of himself with some spirited riding. He fought hard all day, but Brad Todd couldn’t let the old war horse get the better of him. Craig did manage to stay ahead of Ben Edwards which was no mean feat considering Edwards was still relishing his win last week down south. With Adamson leading the championship by over 50 points, it will be a hard task even for Mewse to overhaul the gap. MacKenzie will have his work cut to retain his championship as he currently sits in 5th position but with only 10 points separating 2nd to 6th, it’ll be great to watch it all unfold.

The day was unfortunately cut short as Jay Hague suffered a leg injury within sight of the finish line. This curtailed the last few races as the medics attended the rider on track. The good news is, he’s on the mend and be gagging to get back on track once he’s healed.

Onto the next round at Lochgilphead 29th/30th July for The Scottish Championship as the sponsorship banners from Dyce Carriers, Site Sealants, Safe Access Highland, Shirlaws Aberdeen, FXR, CTi, ACTiPH and AMD will all adorn the impressive location. The hard pack track will bring another challenge for the regular riders to see who comes out victorious.

Robbie Scott

As the popular race series continues to grow, who will join the growing number of top class riders to try their best to hit the headlines.
