Tog Gun Nunn! 2023 Wattisfield Evening Motocross – Race Report & Results

A capacity crowd turned up for the GH Motorcycles/GB Finch Evening Motocross at Wattisfield Hall on 5th July. The event was well supported with 176 motocross and enduro riders competing in a 12-race programme of short sharp races held in just under a 3-hour time frame.

Sam Nunn, Cab Screens / Crescent 450 Yamaha qualified as the fastest rider with 1.40 second lap and then went on to win his qualifying heat, semi-final and the Grand final. Josh Peters – Jim Aim 450 KTM won his heat and the second semifinal, and then went on to finish second behind Nunn in the Grand Final. In the final Shaun Southgate – A Plumber/AJS Stiff Construction 450 Honda initially took the lead before losing it to Nunn on lap 2. Southgate then tried to regain it on lap 5 but both he and Calum Mitchell – Lexa Husqvarna 250 hit the dirt. Finishing in 3rdin the Grand final was Max Broadbelt Eastwood Racing Suspension Honda 450.

In the Consolation Final Tom Grimshaw, Chambers Racing 450 Gas Gas took the win with a 36 second lead over 2nd place rider Taylor Hampshire – Yamaha 450. Tom was really keen to ride the Grand Final but he unfortunately never qualified and the starting gate was at capacity so this was not possible. The club will modify arrangements next year to keep a couple of places back for this type of scenario to ensure close racing.

The two Non-Qualifiers Group A Races were won by Lewis Bond – 250 Gas Gas and Jenson Whitehall – Suffolk Landscape Yamaha 250.

The Non-Qualifiers Group B races were won by Robert Bond – Danger UK Yamaha 250 and Harry Sobkowiak – Kingwell – KTM 125. In both Group B races, former speedway rider Shaun Tacey Honda 450 demonstrated his sharp reactions and bike control off the line by gating first.

One of the spectator’s favourites on the night to watch was former GP ace Jake Nicholls – Welk Bros 125 Gas Gas. Competing against much larger capacity machines on what is a very fast course, he qualified 3rdquickest in practice. He was nailing it everywhere and putting a different perspective on the concept of late braking!

The club has received a lot of positive feedback from riders and spectators about the event which made for a great evening’s entertainment. It’s really surprising how many people came out with their families and good to see the likes of former top racers such as John Banks, Freddie Mayes etc. in the crowd. Our apologies to those that didn’t get into the event with the parking field being full to capacity. We did have an additional field but the unusual high level of rainfall in the two days leading up to the event made the ground too wet to use.

Many thanks to GH Motorcycles and GB Finch for their continued support and also many thanks to all riders, support crews and spectators for respecting the environment. There was very little litter left to clear up post the event which is so different from holding meetings a few years ago!

Hope you enjoyed the night. Diss Club’s final motocross of the year at Wattisfield Hall venue should be the Sunday 1st October. See you there.
