The Good times roll at Ironworks for Geddes-Green! 2022 Bridgestone British Masters Round 5 – Race Report & Results

Round five of the Bridgestone Masters of Motocross, moved northwards to the fast and flowing Ironworks track in Middlesbrough. But, with Pro level entries so low, making it unviable to run the class, it gave all the other classes a chance to step into the spotlight and grab some attention.

Race Report and Images by Dick Law

That’s not to say there weren’t any Pro riders at the event, as four turned up with family members, like multiple British Champion Brad Anderson, who was with his son Vinnie racing in the junior 65cc class. The organisers decided that as they were there, they could race the amateur classes, but without championship points. Needless to say, Anderson (Honda) won all four of the amateur MX1 races with fellow pro rider James Hutchinson second, while in the amateur MX2’s James Hutchinson was second overall. But when they were taken out of the equation, all the usual points scorers were fighting for that all-important championship lead.

Brad Anderson

The weather conditions on both days of the event couldn’t be more different as the track owners heavily watered the track right up to the start of racing. Still, the strong wind and sunshine on Saturday dried the track out as quick as they could get the water down, which meant it was a bit dusty come to the end of the day.

James Hutchinson

But, after racing had finished and the paddock people thought about getting the BBQs out, it started to drizzle and rain. And it rained till the early hours of the morning. As the riders began day two, the well-prepared track had some very sloppy bits at the lower parts of the track. After the first few races had been run, the event was called to a halt to give the track crew time to push the slop to one side, and the racing got better and better as the day went on.

Josh Greedy

In race, one of the Amateur MX1’s, Sean Williamson (MotoLoko Husqvarna), led for the first half of the race till Jamie Fort (LAAB Park Honda), after passing John Joe Wright (JTL Honda) on the opening, passed him and went on to win. Williamson held on to second with Wright third and Josh Greedy (TCR/DH Carpentry Kawasaki) fourth.

Fort got the holeshot at the start of race two and went on to win the race. Williamson spent most of the race in second place but had that place snatched away from him on the last lap as Harry Bradley (Hydrogarden Kawasaki) came from fourth to second. Simon Booth (Acerbis UK KTM) started the race in eighth place but chassed Williamson over the finish line in fourth.

Scott Aldridge

Once again, Fort got the holeshot at the start of race three but seemed to suffer more than some of the others in the Sunday morning slippery conditions as he slipped back to fifth come to the end of the race. Brad Thornhill (WMC KTM) slid in to lead at the end of the opening lap and went on to win the race once you take the “Pro” non-points scoring riders out. Bradley passed Fort and Greedy on lap two for second place, with Greedy chasing him over the finish line third and Wright fourth.

In the drying condition of race four, both non-points scoring Pro riders of Anderson and Hutchinson crossed the finish line in first and second, but the first of the points scorers was Wright, who spent all race in the lead. Greedy was second, with Bradley third.

Overall, without the non-point scores, Bradley, the winner from Fort, scoured the same amount of points and with Wright third, just three points behind the leaders.

Amateur MX2

Aaron Ongley (723 RaceBikes KTM) got the holeshot at the start of the first amateur MX2s but had the lead, and the win was snatched away from him on lap three by Travis Steels (ANSA MX Racing Gas Gas). Ben Clark (Rock Oil Husqvarna) caught and passed Ongley on the very last lap to drop him down a place as the pair finished second and third. Mitch Armour (Call-Mac Scaffolding Husqvarna) came from seventh place to finish fourth, with Adam Harris (AS3 Performance Fantic) fifth.

Steels led race two from the drop of the start gate to the race win and were followed for the whole race Ongley. Harris gated third but was passed on the opening lap by Clark and Armour, who finished in third and fourth.

Callum Murfitt

Race three was almost a copy of race two, with Steels and Ongley spending all race in first and second places as Clarke passed Jesse Wren (Corby Kawasaki) and Mitchell Warhurst (KTM) on his way to third place.

Harris got the holeshot at the start of race three but was passed around the opening lap by Steels, while Ongley went down in the first turn but recovered to third place behind Steels and Clark.

Overall, it was Steels from Ongley and Clark, with Armour just missing out on a podium position.

James Thompson (Kawasaki) with a win, two-second places and a fourth won the clubman class with Adam Paxton (Shires Scaffolding Honda) and Joshua Fytchie (Honda) finishing second and third but only separated by two points. After two race wins on Saturday, Oliver Ruddock was a non-starter on Sunday.

Tyla Hooley

Tyla Hooley (ASA United Gas Gas) broke his collar bone at a British championship event on the last day of last month, but that didn’t stop him from winning all four of the 125cc two-stroke races three weeks later. Henry Siddiqui (Holeshot MX KTM) chassed Hooley over the finish line in three out of the four races for second overall, with Jordan Keogh (TM KT Racing TM) third.

Callum Murfitt (KTM) won three out of the four MXYs races, but a bad start in race three spoilt his 100% winning weekend as he fought his way up to second place and the overall win. Joshua Bassett (Duck Smart Gas Gas) didn’t finish out of the top four was second, with race three winner Ben Zeale (JD Racing Gas Gas) third, just two points behind Bassett.

MXY2 start

Once again, the flying Billy Askew (GRT KTM) dominated all four of the big wheel 85cc races for yet another overall win. Josh Vail (RFX SSP Moto Husqvarna) chased him over the finish line in all four races. Wildcard rider Freddie Gardiner (Matt Gardiner Racing KTM) notched up four third places as Ryan Waggott (Raddie RY Racing Husqvarna) just missed a podium position.

Billy Askew

Some of the weekend’s closest racing came from the small wheel 85s with three different race winners. Race three winner Alfie Geddes-Green (Matt Pope Motorcycles Gas Gas) backed up that win with a second place and two-thirds for the overall win, with race four winner Joel Winstanley-Dawson (Castle Trucks KTM) second and with Kameron Greenhalgh (Inglenorth Contracting Husqvarna) third. Unfortunately, a DNF in the last race of the weekend spoilt Robbie Daly’s (KTM) weekend as he had scored two race wins and a second coming up to the last race.

Jett Gardiner and Amon Eschoe

With three race wins and a second place, Marty Spires (DBC Motorcycles KTM) won the junior 65’s from race three winner Cohen Jagielski (Fasteddy Gas Gas) with Arthur Moore (RMJ Rookie Husqvarna) third.
