Searle wins Huck Cup! Mike Brown Memorial Motocross – Race Report and Results

Mike Brown Memorial Motocross

Tommy Searle became the third winner of the Huck Cup yesterday (Good Friday) as the fans turned out in their droves to a sun-drenched Marshfield for the 30th staging of the Mike Brown Memorial Motocross Meeting.

Some pretty hefty watering made the track tricky in practice and it was Scotsman Shaun Simpson who was the quickest from this session in the Huck Cup part of the meeting, with a tremendous line up turning out in Memory of the much missed Mark Hucklebridge.

MXGP star Tommy Searle was quick from the blocks in Moto 1 having made good use of a shovel to dig out his starting spot and never looked back. Conrad Mewse kept him on his toes the whole race long and finished just a second and a half behind the number 100. Shaun Simpson had to come through traffic and couldn’t quite get on the back wheel of the front duo and had to settle for third. Luke Hawkins looks like he has never been away from Pro Motocross and was solid in 4th, with Jake Millward in 5th and Adam Chatfield making a rare Motocross appearance in 6th.

The crafty old dog Brian Wheeler actually came around the first lap in the lead having cut the course much to the dismay of Searle and Mewse who had to make their way past the wily old veteran.

It was Chatfield who would taste fresh air in Moto 2, taking the holeshot and looking comfortable at the front before Searle and Mewse found their way past. Simpson’s chance of glory ended with a dramatic first lap which saw him go down in the first bend melee, and then again later on in the lap. He fought back to fifth and very nearly fourth being right on the tale of Hawkins as they passed the chequered flag.  Again it was Searle who would take the win from Mewse who put in a late fightback to be almost on Tommy’s back wheel as they passed the finish.  Chatfield held onto third with an impressive ride, with Hawkins fourth, Simpson fifth and an excellent sixth for Jamie Skuse.

Simpson still had enough points in the bag to edge the third podium position behind Searle and Mewse, with Hawkins just a point behind in fourth and Chatfield just a solitary point behind him in 5th. Skuse would round out the top 6 in the overall standings.

Conrad Mewse second in the Huck Cup

The Under 26th South West Challenge was a new addition to the event and provided excellent racing for the large crowd. Brad Wheeler show lightening reactions for the Moto 1 holeshot but Adam Harris worked his way into his tail before making his move to the lead where he stayed for the rest of the race, with Dominic Lancett working his way up to second after a poor start, with Wheeler third.

Brian Wheeler sneaked into the lead in Race 1

Lancett would have the upper hand in race two with Harris having to settle for second with Wheeler again third. Race three would be the decider and Wheeler shot from the traps again, but Harris was in no mood to mess about and gained an early lead, with Lancett soon through to second and giving chase.  Harris would build up a good lead through to take the chequers and the overall from Lancett and Wheeler.

Still got it, Luke Hawkins …

Dan Preston was a man on a mission in the Experts and the Kawasaki rider, made lightwork of getting to the front in each race and taking the three Motos wins. Jonathan Roderick-Evans was never a million miles away from the leader but had to settle for second in each race.  Troy Jones rode well for third while doing it for the 2 Strokers Ben Millward would finish fourth after an early moto fall meant he had to get back on the chase. Millward would finish third in the second and final motos for third overall behind Preston who took the win and Roderick Evans in second.

Mark Sterry with a win and second came home with the “Old friends” Mike Brown Memorial trophy, with Race two winner Dean Warren in second and Darren Kennington third.

Joe Russell was a dominant force in the Seniors with a maximum three race wins and the overall, ahead of Kevin Sanders in second and Gareth Dunsford third.

There were two groups of Juniors with Group 1 being won by Charlie Haskins from Adam Mead and Joe Thomas. In Group 2 Samuel Bishop grew in stature as the event on, winning the final moto of the day and taking the overall, with Freddie Box second and Charlie Palmer third.

All in all, it was an excellent days racing, with a fantastic crowd, amazing weather and a fun family atmosphere which would have done Mike Brown and Mark Hucklebridge proud. Roll on the next Good Friday.
