Rob who needs no introduction to most, is a legend in the sport. After all who can forget him as a teenager racing Kawasaki running the iconic Blue Stratos gear. His career took him to the GP’s, racing for Factory Yamaha, Silkolene Honda Britain, Castrol Honda Britain and RWJ Kawasaki then Honda. Herring’s flamboyant riding style captured the imagination and support of a generation. He was one of our best, gaining GP wins and eleven British championship titles along the way, not to forget he was part of the victorious 1994 British MXDN team who broke the 13-year USA rein. We don’t throw the world legend about too much, but this one truly earned the words status!
In recent years he has been spending more and more time on set. Working full time in the film industry doing both stunt and camera bike work for the very biggest film titles around, Bond, Bourne Identity to name just two – where he has been awarded a screen actors guild award for his work.
His son James who was born at the height of Rob’s illustrious career in 1992 (who can forget those 250 GP’s with Rob on the Castrol Honda, so he was an motocross baby from day one. He has raced since the age of eight on a KX65 and though Rob didn’t want his son to become a professional racer, James is a very calculated and smooth racer like his dad. James now works alongside Rob in the family filming business.
The Farleigh Castle Vets Event was the OG International Vets MX event set up by Dave King 15 years ago. It had always been the go-to event of the vets calendar up until Dave King’s departure after the 2021 event.
Now Dave is back at the helm, joined by Rob “DocWob” Walters, and third partner Shaun Copeman, owner of industry leaders SC Sporthomes. The trio have plans to turn the event around to its former glory days (like it was in 2018/19) and get its place planted firmly back on the MX calendar. We have all witnessed the success of VMXdN Foxhill which is also promoted by Dave King and Rob “DocWob” Walters, so watch this space!
Farleigh Castle Vets MX is the only event to have 60 two strokes lined up on the natural grassy hillside circuit close to Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire. The circuit is synonymous with the GPs of the 80’s, after all who can forget “that day” back in 1985 where Thorpey came blazing through the pack infant of 50,000 partisan supporters. Farleigh Castle is most certainly heavily engrained in the folklore of British motocross.
