Day 1 is wrapped up at the 2024 International Six Days Enduro in Silleda, Spain for Team GB. Currently, the Junior Trophy Team are lying in fifth, with the Women’s Trophy Team in sixth. The Men’s Trophy Team are unfortunately out of the running as Harry Edmondson has been disqualified.
Report and Images by ACU British ISDE Team
Two special tests near Santiago de Compostela and one test next to the paddock in Silleda awaited our Trophy riders, totalling 250km of riding over 8 hours.
Team GB had a tough start to the day. Off the start, Men’s World Trophy rider Harry Edmondson struggled to start his bike. After spending some time locating the problem, which turned out to be an electrical issue, he put everything back together just in time to join the Junior Trophy Team at the first check and stayed with them for the rest of the day. However, on the way to the first check, a queue of riders on a rough bit of the going forced Harry to lose even more time trying to pass them. Despite losing a lot of time, he stayed positive throughout and still put in some impressive test times. Harry has since been disqualified for being seven minutes over the 30 minute limit that a rider a can be late to any time check. Therefore, the Men’s World Trophy are out of the running in the 2024 ISDE.
Despite the bad news for the team, at the first two tests, Steve Holcombe came out swinging and topped the timesheets on both. Despite being held up by another rider on the first test, he still put in the fastest time by far. Scratching the second test, and placing third on the last test of the loop, Steve was lying in first overall after lap one. A set of third, second, and first finishes on the second lap left Steve second overall individually, just nine seconds behind Spain’s Josep Garcia. Steve is well in the fight for the overall win this week, and we will do everything we can to support him to it.
Josh Gotts also had a tough start to the day, with a big off on the opening test setting him back some time. He bounced back pretty quickly and put in some strong times, getting his best finish of the day on test two. Eventually realising he had dislocated his finger, he popped it back in and carried on with the rest of the day to secure a strong result. Jack Edmondson also impressed on Day 1, with some super consistent times and placing as our second fastest World Trophy rider.
In the Women’s World Trophy, the girls had a strong opening day to lie in sixth overall! Nieve had a great Day 1, finishing 14th in the Women’s class. Despite losing over a minute in the enduro tests due to having to pass slower riders, she pulled back some time in the other tests to settle in by the end of the day. Looking forward to repeating the same tests tomorrow, all three girls are eager to get at it!
