Mills fires up the Hills! 2024 Bridgestone British Masters Round 3 – Race Report & Results

The Bridgestone British Masters powered by Rock Oil reached the halfway stage of the season this weekend at Hawkstone Park.

The former Grand Prix venue remains a favourite with the series riders, and a bumper entry saw the start gates filled to capacity in most races. The riders and organisers were rewarded with some beautiful weather over the weekend, warm sunshine perhaps more enjoyable for the spectators than the riders. The rocketing temperatures meant fitness and rider skill came to the fore.

Hawkstone Park became a classically tough and dry sand track, with a fast surface cutting up with demanding ruts, rolling acceleration bumps and more than a few suspension-soaking holes upon braking into the corners. Once again, the track was a credit to the hosting Salop Motor Club, which prepared the circuit and venue to perfection.

All eyes were on an impressive line-up in the Marsh Powersports Expert class, with one rider particularly notable on Sunday’s entry sheet, Christopher Mills.

Having previously spent many years living in the Netherlands, this presented a unique chance to see Mills back in the UK, with the Shropshire sand providing a great substitute for his previously adopted home tracks.

It was no surprise to see Mills top the morning qualifying charts, although the ever-determined Tony Craig put in a flying lap in the final moments, just a few tenths off Mills’ best time.

As the gate dropped for Moto One, however, both front runners suffered from bad starts, and it was Gavin Stevenson’s Honda that blitzed to the holeshot. As they charged up Hawkstone Hill for the first time, Dylan Woodcock stormed to second place, with the impressive Lewis Hall close behind.

The fastest qualifier, Mills, was in the midfield battling with local star Rory Jones and the charging Howard Wainwright. However, he was able to quickly find some lines and move his way up the field.

Dylan Woodcock pressured the early leader, Stevenson, and took the lead on the third lap.

Meanwhile, Mills was on the charge and soon dragged Lewis Hall along with him to pressurise the leaders. Mills eventually pulled away slightly from Hall as he quickly passed Stevenson and began to pressurise leader Woodcock.

No slouch in the sand either, Woodcock was determined not to give up the lead lightly; however, by the sixth lap, Mills was able to make a pass in the woodlands of the Hawkstone tunnel. From there, Woodcock tried to put up a fight but had to settle for second as Mills extended a 16-second gap at the flag.

Lewis Hall took a solid third, meanwhile Rory Jones kept the local fans cheering he fought through to fourth ahead of series leader James Dodd, with the improving Tony Craig and another of the local aces Henry Williams in close combat behind.

Race two saw another lightning start from Stevenson; however, this time, Mills successfully got away from the gate and was immediately on the leader’s tail.

As they leapt over the Georges Jobé tabletop for the first time, Mills was able to storm through in a mid-air pass, closely followed by Woodcock.

What looked to be a replay of Moto One, however, soon went out of the window as Woodcock took a heavy fall. Not badly hurt, Woodcock nursed his bike to the pits, but the twisted handlebars indicated the fall was not a light one, and he opted to withdraw.

Tony Craig had been unable to make the gate due to mechanical issues, but the lineup was boosted by some of the quickest amateur riders opting to double enter, and it was one of those, Raife Broadley made the early challenge. He was drawn into a battle with Lewis Hall, who continued to display all-action commitment with the two-stroke warriors fighting for second. Bailey Johnson was also looking fast, just ahead of James Dodd and Howard Wainwright.

For Christopher Mills however, the tough Hawkstone Park circuit was no problem and he was able to display some silky-smooth Dutch sand style as he took another comfortable win for the overall victory.

Raife Broadley was able to secure second as Lewis Hall faded slightly but still hung on to fourth behind the impressive Bailey Johnston. Hall’s consistency gave him second overall, whilst a brace of fifth places gave James Dodd third overall, along with the championship lead.

The huge entry list of youth and adult championship riders took part in their customary four motos across the weekend, with Bailey Johnstone emerging as the pacesetter in Amateur MX1.

Riding his 250 two-stroke against the mighty 450s, Johnstone didn’t always get the best starts but was able to fight to the front and snatch three moto wins. The clean sweep was denied by Seth Manners who took an impressive win during the third moto, securing second overall. Ben Knight enjoyed some fast starts, and whilst he was unable to hold onto the lead, his consistent finishes meant he pipped Josh Greedy to the final podium spot, the fast-running Aaron Patstone just a little further behind.

Amateur MX2 was a little more clear cut, with Bayliss Utting returning to the series to provide a virtuoso display across the weekend with three moto wins.

He was hoping to make it four, but Raife Broadley, who was unstoppable at the previous round at Schoolhouse, was determined to end the day on a high. Passing Utting on the first corner, Broadley stormed to the final win to secure second overall.

The final podium spot went to Shropshire lad Rory Jones, who, despite some difficult starts, fought through to a pair of third places on Sunday to please the local crowd and get the last podium spot.

Leo Self – BW85

In the Clubman category, Scott Bates topped the qualifying charts but was left to rue a couple of mistakes on Sunday whilst leading in both races, a small tumble near the finish area in the first Sunday moto, along with a fall on the old ‘Yamaha’ table-top jump at the base of the hill meant he had to settle for fifth overall.

Taking advantage of this, in what was again a closely fought category, was Lee Clarkson. He continued his good run of form and put together some solid rides to finish as the overall winner, a clean sweep on Sunday securing his spot on top of the podium.

Consistency was the byword for Bradley Johnstone in second; with some fierce racing near the front, he was able to finish second in each race to secure second overall. Meanwhile, Kane Fisher took a closely fought opening race win, and whilst he was unable to match this result, he put some strong finishes together for third overall.

Matt Bayliss was simply unstoppable in the 125s with a clean sweep of wins. He mastered the tough conditions with some very smooth riding, making the demanding Hawkstone circuit look easy.

Behind him, things were a little closer cut, Will Hadwick taking a brace of second-place finishes, which kept him just ahead of the charging Charlie Richmond. After a tricky start to the weekend, Richmond seemed to improve as the meeting went on, challenging the leaders on Sunday as he fought to third overall.

In the youth categories, arguably, the ride of the weekend would have to be Cohen Jagielski in the 65cc class. He was simply in another league to the rest of the pack as he tackled all that Hawkstone had to offer in his stride, always staying on the footpegs in a manner that the Everts family would be proud of.

That’s not to discredit the chasing riders. On any other weekend, Jett Gardiner would be the runaway winner. Using some good lines, he stormed to second, even getting a brief period as leader of the final moto as Jagielski fought from a poor start.

Shane Jones who took two Moto wins on Sunday in MXY2

Consistency was not easy at the tough Hawkstone track, but Elliott Shawter kept strong, with three fourth places and a fifth in the last moto comfortably putting him on the podium.

Harley Marczak took the opening Small Wheel 85cc win, showing some great speed to fend off Arthur Moore. However, charging in third place was Nixon Coppins who had fought back from a bad start.

Coppins had looked particularly quick in the final laps and, after getting the starts sorted, was able to win the remaining three motos in style, relishing the gnarly sand.

To his credit, Marczak didn’t give up and was able to keep Coppins honest as he charged to second overall. Arthur Moore was the best of the rest, taking a strong third.

The Big Wheel 85 were a lot more clear cut from the outset as Robbie Daly took a clean sweep of wins.

Behind him, though, the action was fast and furious, with any one of five riders fighting it out for the podium. Kameron Greenhalgh looked the closest challenger but had a difficult Sunday and had to settle for fourth.

By contrast, Joel Winstanley-Dawson endured a tricky qualifying session but landed a trio of third places to grab second overall, with Olly Waters also staying ever consistent, a best result of second in Sunday’s opening moto giving him third.

There was a notable guest for the Big Wheels presentation, as Ken Winstanley was invited to present the awards. The founder of the Bridgestone Masters (then known as the KWS) back in 2002, Ken was a welcome guest, with his grandson Joel continuing the Winstanley family’s association with the series.

The final race of the day was the MXY2 class, who had their work cut out as they took to the track as its toughest.

Beau Brown and Harrison Greenhough shared a win each on Saturday, however with Greenhough opting to withdraw from Sunday’s programme to compete at the British Championship round at Blaxhall, it seemingly left Brown open to take the win.

It wasn’t so clear cut, however, with Sunday’s first moto a thriller. Brown crashed heavily at the start and had to play catch up. The fast-starting Finlay Boxall lost a few places as Lucy Barker got past Lewis Proud to charge the front.

Barker held onto the lead for a few laps before Shane Jones managed to find some quick lines and stormed into the lead from Kyron Carron. A late mistake dropped the unfortunate Barker to sixth.

Jones repeated his opening Sunday moto victory in the final moto to grab third overall.

With all the chaos around Austin Beasty stayed ever smooth and consistent, top three finishes across the weekend securing him second overall.

However Brown emerged as the deserved winner, his Saturday win combined with some strong podium finishes ensured he topped the podium.

After two full days of racing, the British Masters crew were able to reflect on an enjoyable meeting, with full gates of riders, minimal incidents and a great atmosphere off the track.

The series now moves towards the finale later in the year at Foxhill, with points becoming ever more vital in the championship chase. Next stop is Culham on July 20/21.
