Mills and Boom! 2024 Acerbis Amateur Nationals Round 2 – Race Report & Results

Hawkstone Park in Shropshire was the host venue for round two of the 2024 Acerbis Amatuer Nationals, and after quite a bit of rain in the week leading upto the event, the track was very soft, meaning it was going to be even more technical than usual.

First up was the Roberts Plant Engineers Vets Over 50 class, with Phil Mercer taking home a maximum haul of points aboard his FUS Marsh GasGas machine and taking over the points lead. Round one winner Danny Tollett fought hard all weekend to take runner-up overall, while Sean Smith improved throughout the weekend, giving him an eventual third spot. Dave Dunn and Andy Watkins rounded out the top five.

There was a huge shake-up in the LS2 Helmets Vets Over 40 category as points leader and defending series champion Ryan Voase had a crash while chasing for the lead in moto one and had to sit the weekend out. This left Aston Bird out front to take home a maximum haul of points after missing round one due to British Vets commitments ahead of new points leader Paul Johnston. Jonty rode consistently all weekend to bag 5 runner-up spots and give himself a cushion at the top of the standings while Lee Martin stood on the lower step of the rostrum.

In the Motoverde Ladies class, Grace Richards took her round one form into round two and scored another maximum with five wins, dominating the weekend. Libby Chatburn set about pulling some points back from her round one DNF and scored 2-2-2-3-2 results to put her back into the mix for a top three come the end of the year, while Leah Evans recovered after a race one 14th spot to take the third spot on the podium by just 3 points over Grace Packman. Ebony Brown had a consistent weekend finishing fifth overall.

Patrick Jackson saw his unbeaten run come to an end in the final moto as he took four wins and a second in the California MX Dreams Open 2 stroke class as Joe Jones managed to fend off the attentions of the Yamaha man to take his first moto win of the year. Jones backed the win up with four runner-up spots for runner-up overall, while Lee Truman stood on the podium in third. Rory Jones returned from injury to take home a respectable fourth, and Leon Ongley rounded out the top five in fifth.

It’s going to be a three-horse race for the Moto Connection 125 2-stroke title as the trio of Damon Strydom, Ryan Waggott, and Corey Hockey were all in their own league. Strydom managed to take home the overall honours with four runner-ups and a win just 2 points ahead of fast-starting Ryan Waggott, who suffered bad starts on day two, which potentially cost the overall. Waggott claimed three holeshots and two wins on Saturday, however, to help him to second overall, while Corey Hockey turned around a 3-3-3 Saturday to win both motos on Sunday and pull to within 4 points of the overall at the end of play. Luke Newman had a solid weekend to finish fourth overall, just a point ahead of Matt Ridgway.

In the Acerbis MX1 championship, Chris Mills lent on his experience in the Dutch Masters and was dominant all weekend, looking seriously comfortable, taking maximum points along with it to close to within 2 points of points leader Josh Spinks who pushed Mills all weekend but had to settle for a bag full of runner up spots but still holds that slender lead in the championship. Defending champ Jack Beniston stood on the rostrum for the first time this year, sharing the points with Jayden Ashwell, but Beniston got the nod by way of the final race result. Will Hughes got better throughout the weekend and finished fifth overall.

In the Craigs Motorcycles sponsored MX2 class FUS Marsh Honda rider and red plate holder Henry Williams extended his lead with his second overall victory of the season. Dominic Newbury made a final lap pass in moto four to take a race win away from the flying Honda pilot but ultimately had to settle for runner-up overall ahead of Josh Waterman, who had a solid weekend stacking the points up and consolidated his runner-up spot in the standings. David Plank and Logan Wilcox finished the weekend with fourth and fifth places respectively.

The Manchester Xtreme Junior Open category proved why consistency is key as Shea Ryan took the overall honours with 3-2-9-2-2 results, pipping Frank Ellwell by three points to the overall win. Ellwell managed to take a race win in moto four but had to settle for the runner-up spot, while Ethan Stephens will be thinking about his two eighth-place finishes, which cost him the overall after two wins over the weekend. Jack Griffiths was the first race winner but finished fourth overall when all was said and done, and Ben Walsh had a consistent weekend, bagging plenty of points towards his championship challenge.

The third round of the series heads to a new track for the series and to Marshfield at the end of June.
