Mewse conquers Foxhill but Dodd wins the title! 2024 Bridgstone British Masters Finale

Conrad Mewse, on his Crendon Tru7 Honda, may have dominated the sixth and final round of the 2024 Bridgestone British Masters, taking two convincing wins from his two race starts. But by competing in all six rounds and scoring high points in all his races, James Dodd was crowned the Expert / Open champion for the year.

Race Report and Images by Dick Law

Heavy rain on Thursday hampered the track crew’s preparation of the historic Foxhill track in Wiltshire. Saturday’s riders faced a challenging and testing course that took no prisoners. Still, with hard work and a lot of grading, Sunday’s track was the best it’s been for a while.

It was clear from the start of qualifying that it was going to take a superhuman effort from any of the other riders to beat Mewse. As the gate dropped on the first race, he got the holeshot and just disappeared into the distance, taking his first win of the day.

Mewse’s teammate, Taylor Hammal, had gated second, with John Adamson (Lexa MX Honda) third. The top three riders became very spaced out and crossed the finish line in the same order they rounded the first turn.

Mewse crossed the line almost forty-five seconds clear of Hammal with an eleven-second gap between Hammal and Adamson.

The battle for fourth was more interesting as Carlton Husband (Phoenix Tools, Evenstrokes Kawasaki), Dan Thornhill (Chambers KTM), and Josh Spinks (M. Williams KTM) battled it out. Husband gated fourth, but Spinks, after passing Thornhill on the opening lap, snatched the place from Husband on lap two, only to have the place taken back the very next lap. For the rest of the race, the three were wheel-to-wheel and bar-to-bar. With two laps to go, Spinks made fourth his own, with Husband settling for fifth as Thornhill watched the action, waiting to take advantage of any mistakes from the riders in front of him.

As for the eventual champion, Dodd. He gated eighth, lost a couple of places by the halfway point and had a crash with three laps to go in the race. He finished fifteenth.

Taylor Hammal

For the first two riders, Mewse and Hammal, the race second race was the same as the first, and the pair gatted first and second and stayed in the order till the end of the race. But behind them, it was all happening.

Charlie Heyman (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna) started the race in third place but was passed on lap two by Adamson, Thornhill, and Husband. A lap later, he crashed and dropped back to thirteenth place, where he finished.

Thornhill then pushed Adamson hard on the way to the finish flag but could not make a pass stick, as the pair finished third and fourth.

Dan Thornhill and Charlie Cole

Overall, it was Mewse from Hammal and Adamson, but in the final championship positions, it was James Dodd, champion, who was thirty-five points clear of Charlie Cole. Henry Williams was third despite not competing in the last round.

“It’s been a perfect day for me, really. Fastest in qualifying and with two race wins,” said winner Mewse, “I have similar lap time times, which I was concentrating on the intensity. We also did some testing between races, and that worked out great. A very productive day.”

When asked about the final round of the main British championship, he added, “I am really looking forward to it. I like the sandy conditions like they have at Preston Docks; it’s the track conditions I prefer. Only fifteen points are in it, and anything can happen in motocross. I will go there and give it my all and hopefully come out on top.”

Mewse’s teammate Hammal said about his second overall, “Being second to Conrad (Mewse) has been the story of the year really. I am second to him every time, but I like that he knows what that feels like when he races against Herlings. He is world-class. I was good in the second race but didn’t get going in the first”.

John Adamson

Adamson said about his third overall, “I have had two good rides today, but I had nothing for those two Honda boys today. It’s nice to be racing back in Britain again. I like sandy conditions, but I like how they prepared the track for today. There were many more racing lines than before, and even when I didn’t get a good start, I managed to get through to third place again”.

With a fourth place, two race wins and a second, Ben Knight (Yamaha) won the Amateur MX1 from Josh Greedy (Moto 33 Yamaha) and Brad Wheeler (MX Vice Evenstrokes Yamaha). But Greedy’s second overall gave him the championship win. Seth Manners (Chambers Gas Gas) was fourth on the day but second in the championship.

It was all about the wildcard riders in the Amateur MX2s, as Bayliss Utting (Honda), with four race wins from four starts, won from fellow wildcard rider George Hopkins (KTM). Registered rider Raify Broadly (Fantic) was third overall but won the championship from Jonathan Rodenick-Evans and Josh Bassett (KTM).

Scott Bates

Scott Bates (IDS Kawasaki) won the Clubman event and the championship, with three race wins and a second. Elliott Pugh (Kawasaki) was second on the weekend, with Jamie Collins (Difts Media Yamaha) third.

The 125s are always close, and the championship was won on the last lap of the last race of the year, and a single point separated the top two. Matt Bayliss (S Briggs Commercials Gas Gas) won the overall and the championship from Charlie Richmond (JP KTM), who also finished second in the championship. Steven Clarke, who was having a wildcard ride on a little two-stroke, was third overall, while fourth-place man Damen Strydom (FUS Marsh Honda) was third in the championship.

Matt Bayliss leads the pack in the 125’s

Wildcard riders Reece Jones (KTM) and Makenzie Marshall (DK Off-Road KTM) were first and second overall in the youth MXY2s, with Harrison Greenough (KTM) third. Beau Brown (Boandock Racing KTM) was fifth overall but had accumulated enough points for the championship win.

Joel Winstanley-Dawson

It was very close at the top of the big wheel 85s as Olly Waters, with a race win, two second-place finishes, and a third, took the overall on the weekend from Joel Winstanley-Dawson (Castle Trucks KTM) and Alfie Herron (L+R Herrow Trailers Husqvarna). But Winstanley-Dawson had already won the championship with a race in hand.

Arthur Moore

Harley Marczak (JMR Foundation KTM) and Arthur Moore (RMJ SJP Moto JWR KTM) finished first and second overall in the Small wheel 85s event, with Nixon Coppins (Yamaha) third, but Moore’s second overall won him the championship from Marczak and Coppins.

Cohen Jagielski

The on-form Cohen Jagielski (KTM) won all four Junior 65 races from wildcard rider Jett Gardiner (KTM). Elliott Shawyer (Airport Autos KTM) third overall was enough to be crowned champion.
