Mewse, Bruce and Waggott are the heroes of Hawkstone! 2025 Motul British Motocross Championship Round 1

MX1

Chambers Racing’s Adam Sterry returned to the British championship with a statement, qualifying in pole position, 0.220 seconds quicker than Conrad Mewse. Josh Gilbert qualified in third, with Tristan Purdon, Brad Todd and Martin Barr following closely behind.

Conrad Mewse on the attack

In Moto 1, Christopher Mills pulled the holeshot but was shuffled back to third early on as Sterry and Purdon made their way past. While Sterry built a sizable lead out front, Mewse was battling through the pack after a poor start. The Crendon Tru7 Honda rider made his way into second by lap four and set his sights on Sterry, whose pace was noticeably dropping as the race progressed. Mewse made the pass on lap eight and didn’t look back, eventually winning by a remarkable 36 seconds!

Adam Sterry – Second overall in MX2

Ben Edwards pulled the holeshot in Moto 2 ahead of Sterry and Gilbert, while Mewse was buried in the pack after another poor start. Gilbert stalked Sterry on the opening couple of laps and made the pass for the lead on lap 4, but he would lose the lead moments after making a mistake. Much like the first Moto, Mewse was setting an incredible pace and once again reeled Sterry in, passing for the lead on lap nine and racing away to the finish for a perfect 1-1 moto score. Sterry confirmed post-race that he was dealing with some shock problems in the latter stages of both races, which explains the drop in pace.

Josh Gilbert of Lexa MX was third in MX1

MX2

In the MX2 class, it was Bike It Kawasaki’s Bobby Bruce, who qualified in pole position ahead of the Gabriel SS24 KTM duo Max Werner and Gyan Doensen. Ben Mustoe, Billy Askew, and Charlie Heyman all showed great speed in qualifying, reinstating the competitiveness of the MX2 class.

Bill Askew taking the holeshot

Bruce pulled the holeshot in Moto 1 and set a solid pace early, opening a gap with Searle, Doensen, Heyman, and Mustoe chasing behind. A flawless ride for Bruce meant he did not come under any threat for the entirety of the race, securing his second-ever MX2 moto win. Searle fended off Doensen to finish in second place, with the young Dutchman finishing in third. Ben Mustoe crashed but still finished in fourth place, a solid ride for the ASA United GasGas rider, as he showed he belongs at the front of the field.

Bam Bam Bill Askew

After an excellent comeback ride in Moto 1, Dirt Store Triumph Racing’s Billy Askew got out to an early lead after pulling the holeshot, followed by Bruce, Searle, and Colmer. The young Brit showed his maturity by managing the race like a veteran, eventually winning by a margin of 7 seconds and securing his first-ever win in the pro ranks. The battle for second place between Bruce and Searle was also for the overall victory, and Searle managed to find a way past Bruce with three laps to go, but stalled his Triumph moments after, handing the position and overall win back to Bruce! With 1-2 moto scores, Bruce secured his first-ever overall victory in the MX2 class. Chambers Racing’s Ollie Colmer’s ride in the second moto may go under the radar, but he certainly turned some heads at Hawkstone and showed that if he can get the start, he can run the pace of the front runners.

Tommy Searle – second overall in MX2

125cc
Charlie Richmond qualified on pole position ahead of Ryan Waggott, Lucas Moncrieff, Freddie Gardner and Hayden Statt.

Hayden Statt getting airtime

Ryan Waggott swept both Motos on his way to taking the overall victory. Hayden Statt continues to impress on the 125, as he led for over half of the second race until being passed by Waggott. Statt’s 3-2 finishes secured him second overall, ahead of a hard-charging Freddie Gardner, who fought back from 19th to 4th in Moto 2 to secure third overall. Charlie Richmond finished fourth overall, and Drew Stock rounded out the top five.

Freddie Gardner showed good speed in the 125cc class

14-year-old Lucas Moncrieff impressed on his MXGB 125cc debut, qualifying in third and finishing sixth overall, which is certainly a great start for the youngster.
