Interview: Robbie Daly; 2021’s winningest rider!

Back in the day when watching AMA Supercross, I remember hearing the term “winningest”. Now I’m now even sure that’s a real word but regardless it certainly sums up the 2021 season of Rising Star Robbie Daly who racked up a huge collection of Motocross titles this year in the 65cc class.

Alongside his impressive list of titles, the ten-year-old from Hertfordshire also represented Team GB at the Coupe De L’avenir (Youth version of Motocross of Nations) where he and his 65cc compadres finished third.  On top of that, he won every race he competed in at the British Minibike Champs.

We had a quick catch up with the impressive young racer who moves up to the Small Wheel 85’s in 2022.

Dirt Hub: Wow Robbie you have had a tremendous season, tell us about it and what titles you have won?

Robbie: Yes for only my second season on the 65 it was a great season.  I took my 2nd ACU British championship
I won the Bridgestone British 65cc Masters championship. I also won the Rock it ’til Sundown midweek classic and retained my title. I won the first Airborne Gunner Supercross, and I also represented Team Great Britain in the U21 des nations. (we got on the podium in 3rd)

DH: That’s some list… Take us back to how it all started, what made you want to ride motocross?

Robbie: I used to watch my Dad Practice/ Race … when I was 5 he got me my first bike a Pw50. Then I got my first Ktm50sx on my 6th birthday and raced that season.

DH: Who are your racing heroes and who inspires you?

Robbie: I always like to watch Jeffrey Herlings his style is great to watch and what he has achieved. My favourite British riders are Conrad Mewse, John Adamson & Liam Knight.  They always have time for me if I see them.

DH: Did you expect to do so well this year?

Robbie: I was hoping to be in the top 3 for my 2nd year before the season started, but after the first round of each championship I believed I could win and focused on that.

DH: Who has been your toughest competitor this year?

Robbie: There were a few, but me and Alfie Geddes-Green had a couple of good battles.

DH: You rode for your country at Coupe De L’Avenir, that must have been cool, how did you find it?

Robbie: Getting selected to ride for GB was an awesome feeling when Dad told me, it was a great experience. I would like to thank Dave Garland for selecting me. I got 2nd in the qualifying race on Saturday then had a bit of bad luck on race day on Sunday.
I got a puncture on the sighting lap before race one. We got it changed quickly, but I was panicking. Then I crashed on the same step-up twice. Hopefully, I get selected again.

DH: Which title meant the most to you?

Robbie: The Acu British Revo championship was great to win as I have the Auto Title and now the 65, but so was the Bridgestone British masters as it meant I took both British National Titles.

DH: Are you staying on a 65 in 2022 or are you moving up?

Robbie: In 2022 I will be moving up a year early onto the Small Wheel 85 in the UK and I am hoping to do the EMX depending on Funds – Travel Restrictions…

DH: What are your goals for 2022?

Robbie: I am doing the British Revo & British Masters – I will be hoping for Top 5 in my first season on the 85 and win the EMX if I can do it.

DH: What are your ambitions within the sport?

Robbie: I would love to become a Pro one day, That would be my Dream – To ride for a GP Team and win a round hopefully more lol

DH: Who would you like to thank for their support this year?

Robbie: This year a mix up with sponsors left us finding some late, so a massive thanks to all of them for stepping in it’s really appreciated.
