High Five for Willie! 2022 Toughsheet National Twinshock Motocross Championship – Race Report & Results

Well, what a way that was to end the National Twinshock MX Championships at the Grange, Tern Hill following the cancellation of round 5 at Barnoldswick. Riders turned out in good numbers at the event supported by Dave Ellis of DLE Construction, and hosted by the Telford MXC. Sam and Kenny Warren and the rest of the club members put on a faultless event and had the mile long track looking in excellent condition, and with a few tweaks from the last time we visited.

The weather was good but a bit chilly as the Evo and Super Evos combined, came to the line. Dan Shepherd returned after a long injury layoff, but controlled the Evo Open class from the front, and took all three wins on his 250 Yamaha. Conor Smith took second on his big
Kwacker, with Michael Smith was third. Michael Ogden had already wrapped up the title at Pontrilas, so gave it a miss this week to
concentrate on the Twinshocks.

In the Super Evo Open class, it was a straight shoot out between Corey Nemeth and Lewis Parkinson for the title, and although Corey won all three races on the day, Lewis did enough with three seconds to claim the title by ten points. Lee Larkin pipped Lee Buck by three points to take third overall.

In the Super Evo 125’s, Telford Club member Rian Warren took the overall with two wins, and a tie break from the new Champion Damo
Strydom, who had a mishap in race three. Jack May came home in third in front of last year’s champion Lee Holland.

Guy Leddy won the Evo 125 class from James Holliday. Aidee Smith had already wrapped up the title at the previous round.

In the Intermediate Twinshock class, it was a great event for Mark Brockhurst who won all three races with ease. Sam Dickenson had his best result of the season in second, but the scrap for the title was between Steve Morgan and Chris Rogerson. Both riders ended up on equal points, which meant Chris was the new champion for 2023.

Only two points separated Michael Ogden and Ryan Ireland in the Wulfsport Experts at the start of play, so nerves were jangling on the line. And thrown into the mix was wildcard rider Howard Wainwright, who shot to the front to take race one from Ogden, Michael Smith and Ryan Ireland. Race two saw Howard holeshot, but at the far end of the track he came an almighty cropper, and the race was red flagged as he received treatment, and took no further part, so best wishes to him in his recovery. The restart saw Ogden lead from flag to finish, so it was all down to the final race, with everyone concerned that Michaels strapped up exhaust would last the 15-minute race. Halfway through the race the exhaust came apart and his lead was diminishing as he lost power, but he managed to limp home to win the title and become the new.

National Twinshock Champion for 2022. Michael Smiths second overall fell just short of overhauling Ryan Ireland for the runner up berth in the championship. Kyle Noble had a great ride for third on the day.

Jack Biddle won all three pre-83 125 races, each time from Jordan Hands and Adrian Jessop.

Matt Rudd wrapped up the 125 Twinshock title with three wins, for his third win in four years. And it was nice to see Sean McCrea making a return to the series taking second overall from Mark Burrows in third.

Jack Mason won the 250 Twinshock class, and with it the title, after his nearest challenger Matt Bennett had a DNF in race three. Oliver
Dodders took second on the day to round off a good season.

Irelands Willie Burgess wrapped up his fifth consecutive Over 50 Twinshock title with ease with three more impressive wins, with Mark
Warttig, Pete Williamson and Tim Sabine battling for second place in the standings. That’s how it finished on the day, but Sabine took
second in the Championship.

Pete Mathia who had already won the Over 60 Twinshock title, had to sit this one out due to his poorly shoulder, but was there to watch. This one was his ninth and record-breaking number of titles since the series started in 1992. Alan Bott saw his chance and took it with two wins from three and was also awarded the Frank Mercer Memorial Trophy by son Dougi Mercer for his efforts. Chris Rogerson beat Martin Snape and Pat Rowe to the runner up overall by two points.

The Clubman Twinshock class saw wildcard James Chambers win on Pete Mathias borrowed bike, with Jamie Mason in second, which was enough to give him the Clubman title, with Craig Ruck only a handful of points behind.

In the Vets Modern Over 40 class it was a win for Lee Martin after some excellent close battles with Simon Bonser who led every race, but Lee managed to close him down and take two out of three. Rick Darlington took third with new Champion Julian Freeberne in fourth.

Former TMX test rider Jonno White won the Vets Over 50 class, and promptly announced his retirement, well there’s nothing like finishing up front is there. Steve Ward brought his Kawasaki home in second by a point from John Littler. Danny Blakeley wrapped up his fifth title by winning race one, but I think his chain came off in race three but at the end of the day it mattered not.

There was an extra Modern Class added to the programme, and it was former Evo Champion Jamie Dobson who made it look easy, with three wins, after a four week lay off through injury. Ben Parkinson took second with Sean Verness in third.

That’s a wrap for the 30th National Twinshock season, roll on 2023, and thanks to all who make this series happen.
