Herring rolls back the years at Wickwar! 2024 UK Evo MX Championship Round 4 – Race Report & Results

Back on Sunday, June 16th, round 4 of the UK Evo Mx Championships took place at the ever-popular Wickwar track in Gloucestershire. Heavy rain had fallen early Saturday evening and during the night, which made things a bit slippery and tricky on race day, to begin with, but with the sun making an appearance several times during the day, the track soon dried and was to produce some excellent racing for the many spectators who were in attendance. There was a big entry which included many wildcards, with the biggest wildcard coming in the shape of Rob Herring, who was out to get some time on the bike for another event later in the year.

The Evo 125 class always produces some fast and close racing, and Wickwar certainly did that and was to produce three different winners, with Daryl Bolter winning the opening encounter from Aaron Colley and Darren Banwell, but in the second race, it was Colley who took the win after Bolter had to ease off when his throttle stuck open, but he came back to take third behind Griffiths whereas in the last race there was no stopping Griffiths who led from the off and took the win with Bolter a close second and taking third was Colley which put Colley and Bolter on the same points but with Bolter beating Colley in the last race he was to take the overall with Griffiths third overall.

Jamie Skuse was absolutely flying in the Evo 250 class

In the Evo 250 class, there was only one winner at the end of the day, and that was Jamie Skuse, who must be one of, if not the fastest Evo 250 riders in the country who put up a fine display of riding, taking a hattrick of wins and the overall with Gareth Artus taking second overall after taking second in every race and with a hattrick of third place finishes third overall went to John McKenzie.

Nigel Kibble was dominant in the Evo 500 class

The Evo 500 class saw James Price have a flyer out of the gate in the opening race and led for the first couple of laps but was being pressured all the time by Nigel Kibble, who got the better of Price towards the end of the second lap and from there on went on to take the Chequered flag just as he did in the other two races to take a clean sweep of wins to give Kibble the Overall with Price with a 2,2,2 scorecard second overall and Nicky Jones taking third overall with a hattrick of third place finishes.

In the Pre 83 125 class, there was some good racing in all three races, especially from Jake Chamberlain, who was victorious in all three races and took the overall, with Tayler Levett taking second overall and Jordan Hands third overall.

No 739 Danny Blakeley holding off Danny Smyth in the Vets Evo over 45 class

In the Vets Evo over 45 class, Craig Pratley continued his winning ways with yet another hattrick of wins and remains unbeaten in this class after four rounds, but behind him, there was some really close and exciting racing between Danny Blakeley and Danny Smyth with Blakeley who got the better off Smyth halfway through the opening race holding on under a lot of pressure in the closing stages to take second with Smyth a close third whereas in the second race the tables were turned with Smyth taking second after getting pass Blakeley mid-race. So, going into the last race, both Blakeley and Smyth were tied on points, so it was a last-race decider to see who was going to take second overall behind Pratley, and it was Blakeley who had the better start and was lying second by the end of the opening lap, but right in his wheel marks was Smyth who was all over Blakeley looking to get past for several laps, until lap 5 when disaster struck for Smyth when his shock blew, and he was forced to retire and up into third was now Dean Warren but he wasn’t going to catch Blakeley who took second to give him that second overall and with three consistent rides Warren took third overall.

Craig Pratley remains unbeaten in the Vets Evo over 45 class

The Vets Evo over 60’s class saw a fine ride from Mike Allport, who was to take a clean sweep of wins to give him the overall. Second overall went to Greg Pascoe by two points, who had been consistent in all three races, just pipping David White, who put in a strong ride in the last race and took third overall.

Mike Allport giving his all in the Vets Evo over 60’s class

In the Super Evo under 40’s class, the opening two races were won by Chuck Davies, but a bad start in the last race saw him with a lot to do but there was plenty of action at the front between Tye Barrs and Carl Jones with the lead changing twice on the opening couple of laps before Jones took command at the front and went on to take the win with Barrs just holding on to take second from Davies who was a close third which was enough to give Davies the overall by three points from Jones with Barrs just three points behind Jones taking third overall, whereas in the over 40’s class it was Nathan Davies who took the overall winning two of the races only to be denied a clean sweep by Simon Dearing who took the other win and with two good results in the other two races he was to take second overall with Matt Coles taking third overall.

In the Super Evo over 50’s class, there were great expectations, as lining up in this class was one of Britain’s finest from years gone by, Rob Herring, who showed that he has still got what it takes to compete with three commanding wins to give him the overall. Steve Wells finished second overall after finishing second to Herring in all three races, and with a hattrick of third-place finishes, third overall went to Paul Wildman.

The under 50’s Modern 2-Stroke class saw Aaron Patstone in fine form taking all three race wins, but there was some good racing going on behind him between Tom Gilbert and James Herring, who were tied on points going into the last race, so the battle was on to see who was going to take second overall. Well it looked pretty good for Herring as he had a pretty good start and was sitting in third behind Ross Millard mid race with Gilbert not to far back in fourth, but Gilbert was starting to close on Herring towards the end of the race and as the last lap flag was shown he was all over Herring looking for a way pass which he managed to do and from there he held on to finish third behind Millard and Patstone, but more importantly he finished ahead of Herring to clinch second overall with Herring third overall, whereas in the over 50’s Modern 2-Stroke class it was Terry House who won the opening race after getting the better of the early leader Rob Mead mid race, and it was Mead again in the second moto who led early doors before House caught and passed him and looked set to take his second win of the day, but unfortunately for House he came to a halt two laps from the end when his chain came off, he did get going again but it kept coming off and he had a dnf which gave Mead the win and it was Mead who took the chequered flag in the last one to give him the overall with second overall going to Gareth Dunsford and third overall went to Darren Kenington.

No 888 Mark Gleadhill holding off No 242 Matt Wells in the Combined Twinshocks

In the Twinshock under 50’s class, there was no stopping Matt Nash, who was triumphant in all three races, taking the chequered flag quite convincingly, with James Hudson taking second overall and third overall went to Seb Dexter, and in the over 50’s Twinshocks it was Mark Gleadhill who won the opening race from James Reeves with the tables being turned in the second moto which meant they were tied on points going into the last race decider to battle for the overall, and it was Reeves who was to get the better start and from there went on untroubled to take the win and with it, the overall with Gleadhill just doing enough in the last race to take second overall by one point from Andrew Batten who had been consistent in all three races.
