Henry steals the show at 2024 World Vets Motocross – Race Report & Results

Henry steals the show at 2024 World Vets Motocross

Over the weekend of July 20th & 21st, the World Vets Motocross returned to Farleigh Castle (or the field of dreams as it is better known) to what was a well-prepped track, considering the track had been used just two weekends prior to this meeting. There was a big entry with some riders competing in two and some three classes, which included many legends from years gone by who were still competing at a high standard.

Race Report and Images by Dave Rich

First to the track was the future class, which consisted of many up-and-coming young stars all keen to show the many spectators in attendance what they could do. This included Charlie Palmer, who, even though he didn’t have the best of starts in all four races over the two days, worked his socks off to take a clean sweep of wins.

Charlie Hucklebridge gave his all in the future class and took fifth overall

In the Over 60’s class, there was a fine display of riding from one of Britain’s finest from years gone by in the shape of Kurt Nicoll as he was to show he can still mix it with some of the best, especially in the third race where he was held up for a couple of laps by another popular English rider in the shape of Greg Hanson but in the end there was only one winner and that was Nicoll who took all four race wins and the overall with Brian Staples taking second overall just piping Hanson who finished a respectable third overall.

In the Over 60’s B class, the overall went to Melv James, who took two wins over the weekend and a second and a fourth, with Neil Smith taking second overall and third overall, was to go to Martin Baker.

No 151 Greg Hanson holding off No 2 Kurt Nicoll in the over 60’s class

The Over 50’s class was stacked with talent, including the likes of Mike Brown, Jamie Dobb, Jeff Emig, Mark Eastwood, Ryan Hunt, Simon Lane, plus many more, and it was to produce some top-class racing in all four races with Brown as he most often does setting the pace with a dominating performance taking all four race wins, but giving his all behind Brown on both days was Eastwood who finished the weekend second overall with a 2,2,2,2 scorecard with Emig taking that third spot on the podium.

Doug Henry had plenty of support in the over 50’s 2 class

In the Over 50’s 2 class, there were great expectations as lining up in this class on a Stark electric bike was Doug Henry who most of you will know is paralysed from the waist down who not only was out there to prove his passion for the sport but really did give his all and was cheered on by the spectators and was to claim a second and a win on the Saturday then followed it up with a second in the first race on the Sunday and had it all to do as he trailed David Dunn by three points going into the last race and needed to do well which he did too much applause when he took the chequered flag and with Dunn coming home in third this gave Henry a well-deserved overall win with third overall going to Christopher Hooper.

The Over 50’s B class saw Paul Weiczrek eventually take the overall with two wins and two second place finishes with a win each going to Adam Smith and David Cooper who took second and third overall respectively.

No 414 Glen Phillips and No 60 Brad Anderson battling it out in the over 40’s class

The Over 40’s was a fast and furious class and even had Brad Anderson out racing for the first time on an electric bike, and he seemed to like it in the opening race as he took the win. Glen Phillips took the win in the second moto, but in the third race, there was great drama as it was Phillips who led from Anderson, but they were to both go down exiting the third corner, which gave Jim Davies the lead which he held for a couple of laps before being passed by Neville Bradshaw who from there went on to take the win whereas in the last race it was a real battle at the front again between Phillips and Anderson with Anderson eventually getting pass Phillips and went on to take his second moto win, but at the end of the weekend consistency was the name of the game, and with a scorecard of 3,7,1,3 Bradshaw took the overall by two points from Davies with Anderson taking third overall.

In the Over 40’s B class, it was Dai Jones who was to take the overall after winning three of the four races, with Dan Whitman taking second overall and Liam Abdullah third overall.

Luke Dean in the MX1 class took the overall and the fastest lap over the weekend

In the MX1 class, there was some good racing in all four races with a win for both Jack Brunell and Ashley Greedy, but with two wins and two fifth place finishes, it was Luke Dean who took the overall by one point from Brunell with Jayden Ashwell taking third overall and adding to Deans overall win was that he had notched up the fastest lap time of the weekend.

In the MX1 B class, it was Sam Rayner who took the overall with three wins out of the four races, only to be beaten by Jay Rumbold in the second race, who took second overall, and third overall went to Fred Reynolds.

Tommy Searle rode Farleigh for the first time in the MX2 class and dominated all four races

The MX2 class saw Tommy Searle making his first-ever visit to Farleigh Castle, having not ridden at this venue before, and he was well up for it. Liam Gale had set the fastest time in Qualification, with Searle only managing fifth, with his quickest lap being two and a half seconds slower than Gales, but as he has said before, the race is totally different. Well, Tommy set the pace in the opening race but was pursued all the time by Adam Chatfield, who was to challenge Searle for the lead many times, but the experience of Searle kept Chatfield at bay.

In the second moto, it was Howard Wainwright in the lead for most of the race, but after not the best of starts, Searle was moving up through the field and caught and passed Wainwright two laps from the end and went on to take his second win. Searle was to continue with his winning ways in the first race on the Sunday with a start-to-finish win, but in the last race, he took the lead on the second lap after passing Chatfield, but Chatfield was to stay with Searle pressing him all the time, but Searle again held off the pressure and didn’t make any mistakes to take his fourth win and take the overall with Chatfield and Wainwright tied on points but by virtue of the better result in the last race Chatfield took second overall.

In the MX2 B class, it was Adam Drescher who won the opening moto, but he didn’t have the best of the other race. A rider that did was Mathew Prosser, who won all the other three races and with it took the overall, with second overall going to James Marchment and Paul Godfrey taking third overall.

Mike Brown squeezing every inch of power out of his 125 in the Evo over 50’s class

The Evo Over 50’s A class was probably the most anticipated class of the weekend, with many top guns on the line, but everyone wanted to see how Mike Brown, who was on a 125, would get on against the bigger bikes.

In the opening race, it was Kurt Nicoll who led from the off, followed by Brian Wheeler, who was trying his all to stay with Nicoll, but Nicoll was easing away all the time. Brown didn’t have a good start but was powering his way up through the field and was soon up into fourth and was to pass both Craig Pratley and Wheeler on the penultimate lap, but he wasn’t going to catch Nicoll who took the win by nigh on five seconds.

Jamie Dobb giving his all in the over 50’s class

In the second moto, it was Nicoll who led early doors, but a mistake on the opening lap dropped him down the field, and it was Brown who had a better start in this one who emerged out of the woods in the lead followed by Pratley and Wheeler with Terry House all over Wheeler who he took a lap later, but the battle was on at the front as Pratley kept with Brown ready to pounce on any mistake if Brown made one but he held strong and took the win from Pratley with House coming home a distant third.

In the third moto, it was Nicoll with a clear advantage in this one who was to lead from the off with Pratley tucked in second and Brown again with it all to do as he was mid-field on the opening lap but he was soon moving up and was up into third after the second lap and closing on Pratley who he caught and passed on the penultimate lap, but again Nicoll had a good cushion and went on to take the win from Brown with Pratley third.

Kurt Nicoll in action in the Evo over 50’s class

The last race had to be the best race in this class, with Wheeler leading early on before Nicoll took over at the front on the opening lap, and Brown also passed Wheeler and up into second. Nicoll was put under huge pressure from Brown on the opening couple of laps before Brown found a way past on lap three, but Nicoll was to stay close to Brown. In fact, he was a little bit too close towards the end of lap three when Brown made a rare mistake and went down on a righthander, and Nicoll couldn’t avoid him and went down as well. Wheeler came through to take over at the front, followed by Pratley, with Brown rejoining in third, but Nicoll was unable to start his bike and was out. Brown managed to get pass Pratley and really had his throttle wound back on his 125 giving his all to chase down the big 500 of Wheeler who he caught and passed and was to go on to take the win to much applause, Wheeler came home in second just holding off Pratley in the closing stages. Brown took the overall, with Pratley second overall and Wheeler third.

In the Evo Over 50’s B class, Dale Silk and Glyn Moreton each won two races, but Silk, who was more consistent in the other two races, took the overall from Moreton. Phil Oxley, who finished just one point behind Moreton, took third overall.

In the Evo Under 50’s class, Jim Davies ended the weekend victorious with a 1,2,2,1 scorecard to give him the overall win, with Albert Martindale taking second and Brad Oleary third. Jack Brunell was the other winner of the other two races, but unfortunately for Jack, a DNF in the first moto cost him, and he ended the weekend fifth overall.

The Evo Under 50’s B class saw Scott Allen take the overall with a fine display of riding and a scorecard of 2,1,1,2, with Nicky Jones second overall and Matthew Cockburn third overall.

Jamie Skuse in action in the Super Evo under 50’s class and took third overall

In the Super Evo Under 50’s class, it proved a good day on the Saturday for Brad Anderson as he took both wins from Neville Bradshaw, with local kingpin Jamie Skuse third in both races, but the opening race on the Sunday saw Anderson having the luck on his side in the opening race as his back wheel kicked out on the opening lap and he slid off at some speed virtually right in front of Skuse who’s reaction needed to be quick as he just missed Ando. Skuse eventually went on to take the win from Paul Johnson, with Bradshaw taking third, so as they went into the last moto, Ando was literally one point ahead of Skuse with Bradshaw just one point adrift of Skuse, so it was all to play for. As they exited the first corner, it was Ando with the lead, closely followed by Bradshaw, but it was not a good start for Skuse, who was well down the field. Ando was to ease away and soon had a cushion over Bradshaw within two laps and, from there, went on to take the chequered flag and the overall; Bradshaw took second in the race to give him second overall, with Skuse clawing his way back up the field to finish in fourth in the race and take third overall.

In the Super Evo Under 50’s B class, Paul Bowen dominated both races on Saturday. With two second-place finishes on Sunday, he took the overall from Lee Harris and Ryan Rowbottom.

In the Super Evo Over 50’s class, there were two wins for one of Britain’s finest on the Saturday in the shape of Rob Herring, but Rob didn’t take part in the racing on day two, where there was a win each for Paul Wildman and Andy Watkins with Wildman taking the overall from Watkins by one point with Paul Coward who ended the weekend finishing fourth in each race taking third overall.

In the Super Evo Over 50’s B class, there were two wins for Brad Davey and a win each for Sean Doyle and Matt Milsom, but consistency was the name of the game, and it was Milsom who took the overall with Davey and Doyle tied on points for second, but by virtue of the last race result Davey took second overall.
