Hard-charging Heyman snags best British MX championship result at Schoolhouse

Tru7 Honda Racing Academy rookie Charlie Heyman scored his best result of the season in the stacked MX2 class in the Revo British championship with sixth overall, moving him up a place to seventh in the series.

At the windswept Schoolhouse track in County Durham, Heyman gelled with the revamped circuit and took a pair of seventh places for 28 points and sixth overall, two spots higher than his previous best this season. In his first year of full-time pro racing in the MX2 class, he has showed increasing speed and consistency as the season has gone on.

After taking sixth in qualifying, Heyman got a ninth place start then battled hard with the more experienced riders around him. At one point he pulled through to fifth place but was eventually demoted to seventh by ex-GP rider Joel Rizzi and red plate holder Isak Gifting who were coming through the pack.

The second race saw the 17-year-old 13th on the first lap and then put on his trademark charge through the pack. He continued to make progress towards the front, only losing a place to Gifting who once again was coming from the back. Heyman took the Tru7 Honda Racing Academy CRF250R to seventh, for sixth overall.

Heyman said: “That was a good day. It’s my best overall result so I’m getting closer to where I want to be step by step. I had better starts and my pace is so much better. Getting a tow off the older lads helps, too. The boys at the front were quite a bit quicker than me at the start of the season but I’m definitely getting closer to them. I’m enjoying it, it’s all coming together, and the motos don’t seem to be as long as they were at the start of the season!

“And the team have done some work on the bike and it’s much better. It’s so good off the starts and it’s a big improvement. The team really know what they’re doing and it’s a great help.”

In the super-competitive MX1 class, Tru7 Honda Racing Academy Callum Green continues to get back to race speed after several seasons off with injury and he scored points in both races – his best result since the first round of the season in the Oakhanger mudbath.

In the first race Green was super-determined and pulled through from 22nd place to a commendable 18th, and was battling with more experienced championship riders. In the second moto he didn’t get a great start and was 20th until he made a pass on ap six to take 19th. He tried to catch the group just in front of him but couldn’t get close enough. He crossed the line just a second behind former British champ Billy Mackenzie. But two points-scoring rides are solid results in such a fast class.

Green said: “It’s definitely the best I’ve felt racing all year – much better than it has been. The first race especially was pretty good. And I reckon if the race had been another couple of laps, I could have made more passes.

“In race two the track felt a bit strange and everyone seemed to be going the same pace. So when I didn’t get a good start it was always going to be hard. But I got through to 19th. I’m much closer to the group ahead of me than I was earlier in the season so it’s a step in the right direction.”
