Gilbert & Spinks outfox their rivals! 2022 Bridgestone British Masters Finale – Race Report & Results

Josh Gilbert and his SC Sporthomes Husqvarna came, saw, and concurred the sixth and final round of this year’s Bridgestone Masters of Motocross at the iconic Foxhill Moto Parc, but John Adamson (ASA United Gas Gas), without his seat in race two, won the Pro MX1 championship.

Race Report and Images by Dick Law

Josh Spinks (KTM) won the Pro MX2 overall, but with season-long high place finishes, Alfie Jones (Chambers Husqvarna) won the championship for the second time.

Josh Spinks and Liam Garland

Someone turned the heat off! The hilly circuit near Swindon in Wiltshire was sunny all weekend, but a chilly northeast breeze had everyone grabbing for their hoodies and coats, but out on the tack, the, for the most part, full start lines provided hot and close racing.

Pro qualifying was all about the SC Sporthomes Husqvarna as Gilbert set the fastest time by a large margin. Still, his teammate Evgeny Bobryshev, who was making his return to racing after getting permission from the countries governing bodies, was a second, with Adamson third. On the MX2 side of things, Liam Garland (Kawasaki) set the fifth fastest time overall but was the fastest MX2 rider.

Gilbert got the holeshot at the start of the first combined Pro MX1 and MX2 race from Bobryshev, Dan Thornhill (Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha), Charlie Putnam (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna), Josh Spinks (KTM) and Garland.

It looked like the SC Sporthomes Husqvarna teammates were going to run away with the race, but at the end of lap three, Bobryshev, while trying to stay with Gilbert, landed from one of the track’s big uphill double jumps, and his machine came to a stop, luckily close to the work area. Unfortunately, it was later discovered a simple fuse had blown on his bike. With the fuse replaced, Bobryshev returned to the race a couple of laps down to get some track time.

Thornhill had taken over the second place, with Adamson coming from seventh to third place.

Putnam and James Hutchinson (KTM) seemed to spend most of the race bettering each other, and it looked like it was getting a bit personal from time to time.

Charlie Putnam

Spinks, on his MX2 machine, was holding his own against the bigger MX1s as he spent most of the race and finished fourth on the track, but the first MX2 rider home. Garland gave him a good run for his money until a bolt in the rear subframe on his Kawasaki broke, and he had to pull out of the race.

Jones didn’t get the start he wanted and rounded the first turn in thirteenth place. But, almost unnoticed by the large crowd, he worked his way up to fifth on the track, but the second MX2.

Alfie Jones

The start of race two was almost a carbon copy of the first as, once again, Gilbert got the Holeshot from Bobryshev, Thornhill, Adamson, and Knight with Spinks and Garland, the lead two MX2 riders in sixth and seventh places.

For lap after lap, Bobryshev kept pace with the leader Gilbert. But as the race time wound down, Bobryshev’s lack of race time started to show, and he was forced to slow down.

Josh Spinks

Meanwhile, Adamson had caught and passed Thornhill for third place, and it looked like he might catch Bobryshev before the end of the race. That was till his seat and rear mudguard detached from his Gas Gas, and he had to ride the rest of the race sitting on the frame and battery of the bike.

He dropped to sixth place at the flag, but as it was two MX2 riders of Spinks and Garland, he still finished fourth MX1 and became the new champion.

Once again, Jones didn’t get the best of starts but fought his way from tenth to seventh but third MX2 home.

Gilbert was the overall Pro MX1 winner with two race wins from Thornhill and new champion Adamson, but in the Pro MX2s, it was Spinks from champion Jones with Ben Franklin third.

“I have had a spank on the bum for not riding the well today,” said a happy new champion Adamson, “But it’s nice to get the MX1 championship wrapped up. I think I will be sitting on a cushion on the long drive back to Scotland”.

Jones said with Champagne dripping from his nose and chin, “I am over the moon with winning this MX2 championship. It’s been a good year for me, my first in the Pro’s as the class is so intense, but I just kept my head down all year and tried to be as consistent as possible and happy to get the job done two years in a row”.

Overall MX1 winner Gilbert said, “I think they did an excellent job with the track, and it’s been perfect all day. It’s nice to have a perfect day, as in the fastest qualifier and two race wins. I felt comfortable all day with great results”.

John Adamson – MX1 Pro Champ

Thornhill, who was second overall in the MX1 class, said, “It’s been a very good day as it’s a step in the right direction after my injury. The last couple of national rounds has been good to me as I am getting my flow back again. It’s a shame it’s the end of the season, but I am looking forward to some time off and then getting ready for 2023 and a new challenge”.

MX2 overall winner Spinks said, “This is only the second round of this championship I have done this year. I love this track, for I felt comfortable from the beginning of practice and backed them up with two race wins. I am excited to come back next year as it’s a great series”.

Adam Wells (Gas Gas) Amateur MX1

It was all about the wildcard rider in the Amateur MX1s as with two race wins, a second and an eighth place Adam Wells (Gas Gas) won the overall from race four winner George Clarke (Honda) and Mark Young (Honda) and all three were wildcards. Rob Wood (Husqvarna) was the highest place championship points scorer in fourth, with Simon Booth (KTM) sixth. Harry Bradley (Kawasaki) was injured coming to the meeting and did just enough to clinch the 2022 Amateur MX1 championship from Jamie Fort (Honda) and booth.

Aaron Ongley (KTM), Travis Steels (Gas Gas) and Adam Harris (Fantic) Amateur MX2

It was close at the top of the Amateur MX2s with Aaron Ongley (KTM) with four wins from four starts, with Adam Harris (Fantic) second and with Travis Steels (Gas Gas) in third place, some sixteen points behind the leader Ongley. But when the points were totalled up, Steels had done just enough to win the championship by seven points from Ongley, with Harris third.

James Thompson (Kawasaki) and Matthew Fuller (Gas Gas) Clubman

Two race wins, and two-second place gave James Thompson (Kawasaki) the Clubman class overall win and, with it, the 2022 championship. But Adam Paxton (Honda) pushed him all the way to the very end as he finished second overall on the day and second in the championship, just two points behind the winner Thompson.

Tyla Hooley

Tyla Hooley (ASA United Gas Gas) is the 125cc 2022 champion by just six points from Henry Siddiqui (KTM). But that doesn’t tell half the story, as Hooley broke his collarbone about a month ago and had it plated, but that didn’t stop him racing. He crashed early on Saturday and broke some of his teeth. So, he wasn’t at his best-come racing. With a couple of wins, Wildcard rider Wal Beaney (KTM) won the overall from Siddiqui and Luke Dean (Fantic), with Hooley down in sixth place. But when the points were totalled up, Hooley was champion by just six points from Siddiqui and with Jordan Keogh third.

Ben Zeale

Wildcard riders filled the top two places in the MXY2s as Bayliss Utting (KTM) and Mckenzie Marshall (Yamaha) were first and second overall, separated by a single point, but in the championship, Ben Zeale (KTM), who was third on the weekend, was the winner from Callum Murfitt (KTM) and Joshua Bassett (Gas Gas).

The continuing intense battle between Josh Vail (SSP Moto Husqvarna) and Billy Askew (GRT KTM) throughout the year has been getting closer and closer. The pair shared the wins and second places over the weekend and finished on the same number of points. But when the points were totalled up, Askew was the champion from Vail, with Conor McGrath (KTM) a distant third.

Robbie Daly (KTM), with three race wins and a second place, won the overall and, with it, the small wheel 85 championship. Alfie Geddes-Green (Matt Pope MC Gas Gas) was second on the weekend and the championship.

Arthur Moore (RMJ KTM) and Mart Spires (DBC MC KTM) tied on pints after the weekend of racing in the juniors 65’s, with wildcard Casey Lister (Gas Gas) third and with Riley Ray Barrow just missing out on a top three position. But in the final championship standings, Spires is the champion from Moore and Cohen Jagielski (Fasteddy Gas Gas).

And that’s a wrap for the year.
