Full House for Franky! 2024 BSMA O’Neal Nationals Round 1 – Race Report & Results

From a sunny, dry Sherwood track Friday morning to a torrential downpour in the evening, what looked to have been a track in prime condition had the track crew working overtime to make it rideable for Saturday morning! The first round of the BSMA Oneal nationals had a bit of work to do, and the race order had to be rescheduled to ensure a good race. Being the only national series to hold an auto class put a lot of extra work into the track prep.

Race Report and Images by Ady Cowshall – Images of Speed

The decision was made to run all the big bike classes for their first block before the youngsters even got to practice. So it was the MX1 and 2 combined class that went out first with a flyer from Scott Aldridge setting the pace going un-challenged. Ash Greedy got off to a slow start finally pulling up to second in the latter stages, but too late to give Aldridge bother. Dan Whitehead started off well, but dropped down to a final 6th place across the line aided by the demise of three frontrunners as first Henry Siddiqui dropped out, followed by Jayden Murphy and Josh Taylor all DNF’ing! Ben Zeale was another who went out with just 1 lap remaining. The fastest MX2 rider was Jak Taylor coming from a poor start cutting through the pack to pull all the way up to third!

Race two saw Josh Greedy pull the lead with brother Ash looking for a passing opportunity. Josh held second for the majority of the race after being passed and it looked like a class one two for the Greedy boys, but Aldridge gate crashed the party with two to go finishing some 30 seconds down at the flag on the older brother. Jak Taylor again put in a strong ride to be on top of the MX2 leader board. Elder statesman Steve Bixby got stuck in with a fantastic 5th place showing age is just a number!

Race three on Sunday saw much better track conditions. Again Ash Greedy got out to an early lead and set the pace with brother Josh battling with Aldridge in the first few laps but the flying 2 stroke of Josh Taylor charged through after passing Luke Sturgeon (who DNF’d before the race ended), but couldn’t catch Aldridge. Mx2 saw Siddiqui ahead of last years champ Leon Williams and Jak Taylor, the last of the Mx 2 riders on the lead lap.

The final race and Greedy did the business again, Aldridge came home second with Greedy jnr third. Siddiqui and Taylor both went out for a second time leaving Jak Taylor to inherit the lead in Mx2, getting pushed by Williams in the closing laps. Young newcomer Alfie Smith got the third placed MX2 bike after coming out of the youth ranks as the Senior open champ for 2023.

The Youth 125/250f class came out next with the 125 of Will Haddock showing the field he was the one to beat, putting in lap times quick enough to be inside the top 10 in the adult class! Ben Casey tried to stay with Haddock resulting in a comfortable gap over third placed rider George Corke who had to fend off Ollie Bubb on another 125.

Race two saw another domination by Haddock, but this time it was another Corke; Max battling with the other Corke, George. But this was for 250f honours. Casey was in the mix until it all went wrong with less than 2 laps remaining allowing another great result for Bubb with Travis Laughton rounding out the top five.

Sunday conditions saw it less technical in the early going and thus made the racing a lot closer as Haddock had close contention this time from Casey closing the gap down to less than two seconds by the flag. Max Corke came through the field to take George napping on the last lap for third. Bailey Mitchell took his best result with a fifth. Haddock took a clean sweep with another victory ahead of Max and George Corke, Laughton and Casey completed the top five.

Two maximums came from the combined vets class. Reigning over 45’s champion Mark Morris took a clean sweep and Sam Callow dominated the over 35’s both being Kawasaki mounted. Callow had moments when he had company from Stefan Little and Jamie Padget but once clear he came home unchallenged. Morris was quick out of the gate on the deep start straight and on Saturday was so far in front of his closest rival it looked like he was one of the younger old men! Sunday however the going was quicker and his margins where challenged by Scotty Williamson and Richard Green. So the fight for the minor podium places was decided by Little’s DNF in race three! Padgett’s 3-2-2-4 scorecard was enough to secure runner up while Tom White’s 4-4-3-3 edged out Lee Baggs for third overall. With The doughnut man taking the max it was a surprise Williamson taking the second step by two points from Green. The expected challenge from Wildman Willis was extinguished by several soil samples through the course of the weekend leaving him trailing a further ten points down.

The new clubman class had some close racing at the sharp end with 4 different race winners! Matthew Fuller took race one, Oliver Wickers race two, Nathan Heath took the third and Sam Menzie the final moto. Consistency was the key to taking the overall and it was Heath scoring inside the top three in each race that saw him pip Fuller by 2 points. Wickers win wasn’t backed up by any other top 3 results relegating him to third overall. Shea Ryan’s 5-6-5-4 results bagged him fourth ahead of race winner Menzie. Joel Kremer’s blistering second in race two helped secure him inside the top ten while Menzie rounded out the day fifth overall.

Wildcard Jensen Severn was on fire in the Big wheel 85 class taking all the wins. Chris Brindley, another wildcard rider kept him honest in the third moto and backing that second up with another second and two thirds securing him second overall. With those two not in the championship the real battle for supremacy was between Zane Stephens and Travis Bixby, but with yet another wildcard getting amongst them in the form of Riley Barrow it really shook things up. Stephens went 4-3-8-2 to Bixby’s 5-4-3-5 just edging it by two points courtesy of the second place finish. The next four registered riders rounded out the weekend only separated by eight points! Jack Brown may have finished sixth on the day but now runs third in the standings followed closely by Lewis Morgan, Jenson Cole and Oliver Burridge.

In Small wheel 85’s Franky Donoghue obviously liked the tough sandy going taking four out of four with big margins over the rest of the field, leaving them with something to think about going into round two! William Dennis was the best of the rest securing two second places but a third and fourth meant he lost big point to Donoghue. Wildcard Teddy Merrin got into the battle with the registered riders taking points away from the likes of Keedan Williamson, Freddie Gurney, Henry Lewis and Max Beard. Lewis and Beard somehow managed to end up in the overall standings ahead of the strong rides from Merrin.

Roan Watson started the weekend off with an impressive victory in the Junior group coming home half a minute in front of nearest rival Riley Rogers who in turn had a good 20 seconds on Charlie Tunnicliffe with the next three riders in close succession, led in by Logan Lewis, with Finlee Pope and Forrest Roberts all within striking distance of each other.

Race two was quite a shake up with Jack Clark taking the win with the only rider scoring top 5 in race one. Pope finished second, Oaklan Winnall, Ronnie Morgan and Tyler Peaty who were all outside the top ten in race one, came through next all courtesy of Watson’s misfortune.

Watson came out to set the record straight in race three leaving everyone in his wake. Pope had now gotten used to the going and again came in runner up ahead of an on fire Morgan with Winnall pushing him all the way. Peaty managed another fifth on possibly his least favourite circuit.

The final race of the weekend saw Roan again take a commanding win, Clark second, Pope third and Morgan continuing his form in fourth. Will Kremer got himself into the top five for the first time aiding a top ten overall.

Cohen Llewllyn stormed the first race in the Autos with nearly a two minute lead over second and third placed Leo Edward and Cody Roberts. The deep sandy going meant for a stretched out field as it was over another minute before fourth placed Jesse Eyles crossed the line.

Llewllyn dominated race two once again but it was Jake Sayers running second this time after not scoring in race one. Roberts got the better of Edward with Jaxson Hooper claiming fifth.

Race three saw Llewllyn’s closest challenge so far as Sayers kept him in sight for a few laps and managed to keep the gap down to 20 seconds at the finish. Roberts, Hooper and Edward kept it tight going into the final race.

Sayers took the final race after Llewllyn chucked it down the track, but remounted and scythed through the pack to come back to second and take the overall. Roberts, Hooper and this time Eyles got back into the top five.

With the next round on a more traditional hardpack going will it turn the tables on those that rode the sand so well?
