Full bore at Brookthorpe for Smith! 2023 UK Evo MX Championship Round 3 – Race Report & Results

Back on the weekend of 20th & 21st May round 3 of the Uk Evo Mx Championships headed to Brookthorpe in Gloucestershire for what was a fast and furious couple days of racing, but before racing got underway on the Saturday all the competitors did a lap of honour as a mark of respect in memory of Simon Mitchell.

Race Report and Images by Dave Rich

The racing consisted of three blocks on the Saturday with two blocks on the Sunday and was to produce some of the best racing in the series so far, especially in the Evo 125 class which was stacked with talent and was to produce some good tussles not just at the front but further down the field as well. Daryl Bolter on his Cr125 Honda won the opening race after not the best of starts from fellow Cr125 rider Jim Davies with Bradley Doyle taking third, but in the second moto Bolter lead early doors but was pushed hard on the first couple of laps by Kristian Hutchings who eventually got pass Bolter and went on to take the win with Davies this time taking third.

Daryl Bolter giving his all in the Evo 125 class

In the third moto Bolter had the best start and lead the opening lap before a mechanical fault saw him pull up and it was Davies who took over at the front from Jordan Barrs with Barrs taking the lead by the end of the fourth lap, but a mistake saw Barrs drop back down the field and up into the lead now came Hutchings who had got the better of Davies who was to go on to take the win from Davies with Doyle taking third. Sundays racing in the 125’s saw a fine display from Bolter who won both races but there was some really good close racing behind him between Hutchings and Barrs with Barrs eventually taking second whereas in the fifth and final race it was much a carbon copy race with Bolter heading from the off, but all eyes were on Hutchings and Barrs again who were having a real close encounter with Barrs managing to get pass Hutchings two laps from the end but Hutchings kept coming back at Barrs and took it right to the line with Barrs just holding on to take second literally by a second, but with Hutchings taking third who had been consistant all weekend he was to take the overall from Davies and third overall went to Barrs.

No 98 James Paton and No 77 Jamie Gardener battling it out in the Super Evo over 50’s class

In the Evo 250 Class it was Jamie Smith on his Cr250 Honda who took the overall on the weekend with four wins out of the five races with Jordan Carrier on his Kx250 Kawasaki the only rider to beat him over the weekend but the best racing in this class was to take place between Nigel Kibble on his Yz250 Yamaha and James Kensington on his Cr250 Honda with Kensington just doing enough at the end of the weekend to take the second spot on the podium by six points from Kibble who took the third place overall.

First Corner action in the combined Evo 250/500 class

The Evo 500 class was to produce three different winners over the weekend with Ben Griffiths on his Cr500 Honda winning three of the five races with a race win each for the Yz490 Yamaha of Philip Dyson with the other win going to the Cr500 Honda rider Paul Edge but it was consistency that counted for the overall at the end of the weekend and that went to Griffiths who took the top step of the podium with James Price on his Kx500 Kawasaki taking second overall and Alex Wallis fellow Kx500 rider taking third overall.

In the Super Evo under 40’s class there was no stopping the Kx250 Kawasaki of Scott James on the Saturday who took all three race wins, but not such a good day for James on Sunday as he was leading the opening Sunday race before he came to a halt and this was a Dnf for him and this left the overall wide open with the little Kx125 Kawasaki of Chuck Davies taking both the wins on Sunday and with top three finishes in the Saturdays races it was Davies who took the overall from Ryan Allen with third overall going to Cr500 of Oliver Weeks, whereas in the over 40’s class it was John Butler who took the overall with a 2,1,1,1,2 scorecard by one point from Nathan Davies with Luke Dewey taking that third spot overall.

Jason Morris was a clear winner in the Super Evo over 50’s class

In the Super Evo over 50’s class there was no stopping Jason Morris on his Cr500 Honda who totally dominated all five races to give him the overall with the Kx500 Kawasaki of Dean Warren Morris’s nearest challenger in all five races with a scorecard of 2,2,2,2,2 taking second overall with Max Hendy with five consistant rides taking third overall.

The Vets over 45 class saw Martin King run away with it and notched up a clean sweep of wins on his Cr250 Honda with the Cr125 Honda of Steve Bundock putting together some good results in all five race to be rewarded with second overall and taking third overall was Mark Hutchinson on his Kx500 Kawasaki.

In the Vets over 60’s class it was Nick Baum on his Cr250 Honda who won the opening race from fellow Cr 250 rider Vince Crawley with Crawley going on to win all the other four races and with it took the overall from Baum with Kevin Spiller on his Husqvarna 450 taking third overall.

Terry House took five out of five wins in the Twinshock over 50’s class

The Twinshock under 50’s class saw a dominant display of riding from Allen Waring on his 490 Maico on the Saturday and the first race on Sunday but unfortunately for Waring in the last race he was to pull up with a problem and this race win went to Matt Nash on his 250 Red Rocket Honda and with Nash second to Waring in the opening four races Nash took the overall from Phillip Peaster with James Reeves taking third overall, whereas in the over 50’s class there was no stopping Terry House who was out on a borrowed Maico from Sammy Doble who was to soon to get to grips with it and won all five races to give him the overall from Wayne Twidle and taking third overall was Nick Dyer.

In the Modern under 50’s 2-Stroke class it was Paul Burn on his Yz250 Yamaha who took the overall with four wins and a second from Jason Williams who was the only rider to beat Burns over the weekend taking second overall with Josh Herbert taking that third spot on the podium and in the over 50’s class it was Gareth Dunsford who took the overall with a 1,2,1,1,1 scorecard with Darren Shortt second overall and third overall was to go to Jeremy Timms.
