First blood to Dean! 2024 Nora92 British Cup Round 1 - Race Report & Results

Over the Bank Holiday weekend Sunday and Monday, the opening round of the NORA92 British Cup Championships took place at the ever-popular Landrake Moto Parc in Cornwall.

Race Report and Images by Dave Rich

This was the first meeting at this venue and as usual the track had been prepped nigh on to perfection prior to the meeting, but a little rain early morning was to make things a bit difficult in places and with more rain falling mid-morning the track became very difficult especially for the smaller bikes, but Mondays racing was totally different as the track had been prepped again and the sun was out which was to produce some very good racing in all classes.

In the Expert class it was Luke Dean who was quickest in qualifying and had first pick of the gate, but it was Bradley Wheeler who got the better start in the opening race and look set to take the holeshot, but Dean had better ideas as he had the inside line and shot to the front exiting the first corner and took the holeshot with Finlay Evans there in third, but Evans was to go down on the opening lap and up in to third was now Corey Hockey. Dean was flying at the front and by the end of the second lap he had a fair cushion, but it was getting good behind him as Hockey was all over Wheeler looking to find a way pass which he eventually did on the eighth lap when Wheeler made a mistake and dropped back down the field and up in to third was now Tommy Alba who had a bad start, but right on his heels was local Cornish favourite Louie Kessell who was determined to find away pass Alba which he did on the last lap to take third behind Hockey and Dean who was a comfortable winner.

Louie Kessell gave his all and took second overall in the experts

In the second moto it was Lennox Dickinson who led early doors from Wheeler and Dean but by the end of the opening lap the lead had changed and it was Alba now at the front with Hockey close in second who was to challenge Alba on the third lap and managed to take the lead, but his lead was only for a lap as he was to go down hard injuring himself in the process which was to put him out for the rest of the meeting. Alba was back leading, but right with him was now Dean after his earlier mistake who took over at the front on the same lap and was to gradually pull away, but Dean was to make another mistake a lap later and Alba again was leading with Kessell now in second doing his upmost to hold off Dean. Alba took the win with Dean eventually getting the better of Kessell on the penultimate lap taking second.

Luke Dean turning the power on in the experts and took the overall win

In the third moto on the Monday initially it was Wheeler with the best start but after the opening lap Dean was at the front with Kessell in third all over Wheeler who he managed to get pass on the second lap as did Alba who was now in third. Both Kessell and Alba closed right up on Dean and were pressuring Dean for several laps until the seventh lap when Dean went down and both Kessel and Alba went through, Dean was soon back on it though and managed to catch and pass Alba and was soon to catch Kessell at the front who he got the better of on the last lap to take the win with Kessell just holding off Alba by two hundredths of a second to take second. The last moto saw Josh Taylor with the early lead, but as with the other races it all was to change by the end of the first lap as up in to the lead was to be Kessell with Alba now in third who a lap latter got the better of Taylor to take second. Dean didn’t have the best of starts in this one but was making ground all the time and was to soon pass Taylor to take third and on the same lap was to get the better of Alba and was now chasing down Kessell gaining on him all the time and on lap 8 he got pass Kessell and was to go on to take the win from Kessell with Alba third which was also the top three overall over the weekend.

No 55 Tott Liell and No 151 Josh Bond battling it out in the intermediate class

In the intermediate class there was some good close racing on both days where in the opening race on Sunday, it was a start to finish win for Dave Anthony with Ashley Locke after not the best of starts climbing his way up through the field to take second just a head of Billy Elvin who took third whereas in the second moto again it was Anthony who led early doors from Nigel Woodman before Woodman made a mistake towards the end of the opening lap saw Ross Hudson move up who was also to take the lead passing Anthony on the same lap. Locke again was not to have the best of starts but just as he did in the opening moto, he was to claw his way up through the field and by the end of the fourth lap he had caught and passed both Anthony and Hudson to take the lead and from there went on to take the win with Hudson after a real good tussle with Anthony taking second and Anthony third. The third moto was to be the best race in this class as positions were to change many times for the lead between Anthony and Connor Warren with Anthony just having the upper hand going in to the last lap but unfortunately for Anthony, he came to a halt which was enough to give Warren the win, Elvin took second with Locke taking third. The last moto saw Daniel Chapman lead from the off for the first couple of laps before losing out to Warren who from there went on to take the Chequered flag for the second time over the weekend with Chapman taking second and third went to Locke which was enough to give him the overall, Warren took second overall with Chapman third overall.

Connor Warren took second overall in the intermediate class

In the Novice class there was a fine display of riding from Harry Burton in the opening race as he didn’t have the best of starts and was to collide with a fallen rider on the opening lap and had it all to do which was exactly what he did moving in to the top three and then getting pass Shaun Anthony and in to second and was soon challenging Nick Oram for the lead which he took towards the end of the fourth lap and from that point he went on untroubled to take the win from Oram with Anthony third. Oram again with the best start in the second race with Lee Johnson this time in second but in third with a better start was Burton who was soon in a rhythm and by the end of the opening lap he had taken the lead which he wasn’t going to give up and took his second win, Greg Thynne had come through to take second with Oram third.

In the third moto it was Lee Johnson who shined at the front on the opening lap closely followed by Burton with Burton soon hitting the front who was followed by Thynne who had got the better of Johnson. Thynne was giving his all in this one and kept with Burton as not to let Burton get away, but Burton held strong holding off Thynne right to the chequered flag and took his third win of the weekend by less than a second from Thynne with Arron Saunders after a long hard battle with Oram taking third. In the last moto there was plenty of drama as it was Johnson again who led early doors before, he was to be passed by Oram who was soon put under pressure from Thynne who in tall was gradually being pressured by Burton who didn’t have a good start. Thynne managed to pass Oram mid race and took the lead as did Burton who was now in second and was to close in on Thynne and was to challenge for the lead which he took, but Thynne was to stick with Burton and retook the lead a lap later and was to go on to be the only rider to beat Burton over the two days with Saunders a distant third. Burton took the overall from Thynne with Oram third overall.

Riley Cowell in action in the youth class

The Ladies class saw some good tussles in all four races with Kathryn Booth taking two wins and the other two wins going to Grace Packman and Ria Truman but at the end of the two days consistency was the name of the game and that was exactly what Truman accomplished with a scorecard of 3,3,1,3 to give her the overall with Packman second overall and Booth third overall.

In the Youth class there was a first class display of riding from Charlie Richmond who had qualified three seconds quicker than any other rider and was the only rider over the two days to take a clean sweep of wins with Shane Jones taking second overall and Kenzie Cole third overall.

The Small Wheel 85cc class saw Jett Gardiner win the opening encounter even after dropping it early in the race while lying in third, but Jet picked himself up straight away and chased down the leading two and on the last lap was to catch and pass Author King to take the win with Ollie Truman taking third. In the second moto King again had a good start and led from the off but on lap 2 Gardiner was right on him before making a mistake which dropped him down the field and King went on to take the win from Truman with Daniel Devine taking third. Gardiner did come back from his mishap and finished 5th, but he was later disqualified for outside assistance. The third race saw King again dominate from the front and raced away to take the chequered flag with Gardiner second and Truman third whereas in the last moto it was Gardiner this time who was triumphant with King a close second and Truman third but the overall went to King with Truman second overall and third overall went to Sebastian Devine who was consistant in all four races.

In the Big Wheel 85cc class there was some good close racing especially in the opening race with Casey Lister setting the pace, but the battle was on behind him between Archie Congdon (Landowners Grandson), Ryan Waters and Olly Clift with them changing positions for the first couple of laps. Lister was to take a comfortable win with Clift taking second with Congdon having to settle for third. In the second encounter it was Lister with the best start, but right on his heels straight away was Waters who towards the end of the opening lap managed to pass Lister and took over at the front which he held for a couple of laps but Lister had kept with him and he was to retake the lead mid race and from there went on to take his second win with Waters not too far back taking second and Clift third. The third moto saw Waters have a blistering start who with a clear track in front of him was to soon pull away at the front and went on to take the race win with Clift taking second after passing lister mid race who came home in third. In the last moto it was Lister with the advantage from the off, but he was soon to be caught and passed by both Waters and Clift on the opening lap and Clift was to get the better of Waters to take the lead on the same lap, but this was short lived as straight away Waters piled the pressure on Clift and forced his way back to the front and from there went on untroubled to take the win with Clift second and Lister third which was also the overall over the two days.

Arthur King was consistent in the Small Wheel 85cc class

The 65cc class was also very competitive with Freddy Graham initially leading the opening race for the first couple of laps before getting passed by Jack Waters, but Graham had not given up and came back at Waters on the very next lap and took the lead back and was to go on to take the win with Waters second and third was to go to Blake Marks Bracey whereas in the second race it was Alfie Cotter who dominated the proceeding with a start to finish win with Logan Lewis just two seconds behind coming home in second with Waters third. In the third moto again, it was Cotter who led the race from the off before losing out to Waters on the second lap who was to go on to take the win, Cotter was second with Lewis third. In the last race it was Waters who held the lead for most of the opening lap before losing out to Cotter who had passed Graham on the opening lap and was now leading and was untroubled for the duration and took the win with Graham and Lewis both passing Waters on the last lap to take second and third which at the end of the two days we had four different race winners, but the overall went to Cotter with Waters second overall and third overall went to Graham.

The Auto 50cc class was well supported with some of these kids maybe stars of the future and the way they dealt with the tricky conditions on the first day was amazing. In the opening race it was Jenson King who showed his class with a start to finish win with Eli Reynolds second and Teddy Moore coming through on the last couple of laps taking third. In race two it was a carbon copy from King who led from the off to take the win by nigh on a minute from Moore with Reynolds third. The third race on the Monday saw Cohen Llewellyn who didn’t take part on the Sunday have a flyer off the line and led for all the race to take the win with King who had challenged Llewellyn earlier on in the race taking second with Reynolds third. The last moto was a bit of a precession for the leading two with Llewellyn again taking the win from King with third going to Moore. Overall was to go to King with Moore second overall and third overall went to the consistant Trevor hill.
