Conrad Mewse wins the Patchquick Trophy at third attempt – Race Report and Results

On Wednesday evening, June 19th, motocross enthusiasts attended Little Silver Moto Parc Exeter for the 76th running of the famous Patchquick Trophy event, which again had kindly been sponsored by Monsters of Dirt and was hosted by (SWOR) South West Off Road in conjunction with the West of England Motor Club. The track had been ripped and had plenty of water put on prior to the start of practice and had more water put down after practice to keep the dust to a minimum and was to produce some pretty good racing.

Practice was to commence, and timed qualification was used in all three sessions to determine who would enter the main Patchquick races and B & C races.

In the opening Patchquick Trophy race, there was a surprise leader out of the first corner in the shape of Christopher Mills, who was on a mission, followed by Conrad Mewse and Dan Thornhill. Mills was still there at the end of the opening lap, but right on his heels was Mewse looking to find away pass which he did just before the end of the second lap when Mills went down on a lefthander when his bike went into neutral.

Up into second after getting past Thornhill was now Todd Kellett, a former winner of the Trophy back in 2016, but he had no answer to Mewse at the front as Mewse was to gradually ease away and went on to take the opening race win from Kellett and Thornhill. In the second moto, the track had dried a bit, and it was Josh Taylor who was to lead early doors from Mewse with Thornhill again with a good start tucked in third just ahead of Kellett, but by the end of the opening lap, Mewse had got the better of Taylor to take the lead with Thornhill all over Taylor like a rash but Taylor held strong for a further couple of laps before Thornhill and Kellett both found away pass.

Mewse was pulling away all the time at the front, and Kellett was desperate to get past Thornhill, which he did, dropping down one of the steep hills and was now to try and close the gap on the leader Mewse, but it was to no avail as Mewse was to go on to take his second win of the evening from Kellett with Thornhill again taking third. The last race saw Thornhill initially with the lead, but this was short-lived on the opening lap as Mewse took over at the front, and Thornhill was soon under pressure from Kellett, but it wasn’t until a lap later that Kellett eventually found away pass Thornhill and was up into second and was now on the gas to try to close in on Mewse at the front which Kellett did towards the end of the race but it was a big ask, and Mewse took the Chequered flag to make it a clean sweep of wins on the night but more importantly he, at last, had won the Patchquick Trophy at his third attempt and will get his name inscribed on it to join many others in the past.

In the B group, there was no stopping Jordan Gosling once he hit the front. He was to win both races quite convincingly from Billy Saunders, who took second overall. Third overall, with two consistent rides, went to Kieran McLelland.

In the C group, it was Kieran Barrow who led the opening race from Harry Burton, but a mistake from Barrow on lap 2 saw Burton take over, and with a clear track in front of him, he was to go on untroubled to take the win whereas in the second moto, it was nigh on a carbon copy as the first race with Jeremy Tidball leading on the opening lap from Burton who again found away pass on the second lap and literally went on to make it two wins from two with Craig Garrett taking second overall and third overall went to Sam Roberts.
