Cohen Masters the Mountain! 2024 O'Neal BSMA Nationals Round 2 - Race Report & Results

Racing on the surface of the moon—or it could have been! The BSMA O’neal national went to Monster Mountain in the rugged Welsh landscape for round two of the series under extreme weather conditions. Well, no wind or rain is pretty extreme for this purpose-built race track, so they say!

Words and Images by Ady Cowshall – Images of Speed

With the weather onside, the track had to be watered, so it was a slippery start for the vets first out on track. Local Welsh Wizard Glen Phillips set a pace no one could live with, hitting the front from the start and pushing the pace to finish almost half a lap in front of the field!

Fellow countrymen Rob Lewis and Nicky Jones gave chase in front of regular championship runners Sam Callow, Stefan Little and Jamie Padget. Lewis took a lie down on lap two, handing Jones over to Merthyr mafia’s own Jones, who managed to hold on in front of Callow. Lewis had dropped outside the top 10 but recovered to sixth in front of another Welshman, Tom White.

After a poor start by his own standards, Mark Morris came back to eighth and first place among the proper old-timers. Race two was another vanquished by Phillips, who was followed round the first turn by two of the over 45 riders, Ryan Bacon and Morris. Lewis was soon past the pair and looked comfortable in second until Callow got his act together and caught him with two to go. Jones was buried outside the top ten and quickly made passes to come back through to fourth ahead of Little and Bacon, crossing the line as the first of the OAPs.

Race three on Sunday saw more water laid down, but Phillips, who is used to treacherous conditions, put the hammer down to take a third win. Morris gated at the front slowly getting overhauled by the babies of the class, Lewis first to go passed, holding second this time in front of Callow. Little then got Padget with Bacon passing Morris for the win in the over 45s.

The final Vets encounter saw Phillips go out within seconds of the start with a mechanical issue, handing the reins over to Lewis. For Lewis, it was short-lived as a freak incident involving his boot breaking and getting caught in the frame saw him drop like a Welsh avalanche down the order. Callow inherited a welcome lead, holding a comfortable gap over Little, who had pressure from Padget and White as the three crossed the line in close succession!

The Clubman class was next out, and Matthew Rayson hit the front, piling on the power to stretch an uncatchable lead. Conner Jago, moving into the class for the first time, made some quick passes to find himself in second after a couple of laps but didn’t have an answer for the leader. Behind him, it was like a war between Oliver Wickers, Tristian Daniels, Adam Hardy, Shea Ryan, and Nathan Heath. Heath held firm, claiming third, while Daniels and Wickers crossed the line only a second behind and only two-tenths apart!

Race two saw a mega start from Sam Browning, but his time at the front was short-lived as Rayson stormed past on the first lap, followed by Ashley Bowden and Heath. Heath made an error dropping back to eighth, helping Jago make up places as he managed to climb back to third. Ryan had a blistering ride to come through from tenth to fourth, pushing Guy Britton back to fifth.

Sunday saw yet another leader. This time, Daniels was out front and held the lead until half a distance. Wickers got passed by Rayson early on but carried his pace as Rayson passed Daniels for the lead a lap later. Wickers followed him by. On the final lap, it was Wickers who took the chequered by a few seconds. Jago couldn’t quite make the pass on Daniels, and Britton held another fifth.

The final race saw a shootout between Rayson and Jago as the pair pulled a gap on the field. Heath and Bowden both lost places to Daniels only to re-pass after Daniels hit the dirt. Adam Hardy made steady progress as he scored his best result of the weekend, passing Heath with two to go for fifth.

The big guns went out with MX1 and MX2 combined on the super-fast circuit, Jaydon Murphy setting off to make amends for his first round DNF with a great holeshot, but he had Henry Siddiqui for company studying his lines for half the moto before making his move. Murphy stayed in touch as the pair pulled a substantial gap over the pack. Kieran Yorke had company for third until Ricky Carter binned it, leaving Yorke a lonely third for the majority of the race until last year’s MX2 champion had worked his way past half a dozen riders to get within inches at the line! Steve Bixby made a run at Callum Gordon on the final lap, nicking fifth, while Jacob Bowden also got past the flagging Gordon.

Race two saw Siddiqui go down in turn two, leaving Murphy an easier run, but the pit boards had come out notifying riders they had a shot at the win, and the pace of the top eight was on par, and the race was taken to Murphy. Yorke had Murphy within reach, but every time he inched closer, Murphy responded. Carter had gone with Yorke, and the pair traded places several times. Behind them, Bowden and Gordon did the same. Murphy put in his fastest lap with three to go and pulled a gap that kept the heat off; Carter suffered the same fate and had to settle for a third while behind Bowden got the better of Gordon with Williams, Bixby and Tommi Davies all waiting on slip-ups to capitalise.

Sunday saw the addition of Jak Taylor into the mix, but it was Siddiqui who led them away. The elder statesman Bixby gated well but was soon demoted by Murphy. Bowden and Taylor were next through, with Taylor quickly making up ground on the pair at the front. As the race progressed, Taylor made the pass on Murphy, but it was Siddiqui hanging tough until the final lap when Taylor made the pass for the win.

The last race for the MX classes saw another blinding start by Murphy. Bixby was right there and initially challenged for the lead before Taylor and Yorke both made passes. Siddiqui didn’t get the start needed and was playing catch up. Bixby held firm in fifth until a silly tipover on the final bend dropped him down the order as he floundered, picking himself up not once but twice as he overbalanced! Siddiqui had already made his pass and was up to third chasing Murphy, who had been caught by Taylor in an impressive win with a fastest lap two seconds quicker than anyone else! It was an impressive ride coming from Dylan Williams to come through the field to grab his top result of fourth with the third-fastest lap time!

The mixed capacity Senior class always throws up plenty of excitement. Ben Casey drew first blood in fine fashion getting out front and out of the carnage that went on behind. George Corke got out the gate well but dumped it on the first lap Corey Gordon took over briefly before Max Corke riding hard and fast scythed through from the rear end of the top ten to go into second by lap two! Only to throw it down the track! Shane Jones was now taking up the slack but he only lasted two laps before retiring with a DNF! Alfie Crealock-Lovell had started well but the pace saw him slip down the order while Charlie Hucklebridge bided his time and by half distance found himself in a comfortable second spot. Gordon stayed constant and was repaid with third place although the pressure from behind was building as the Corke boys where were trading places and getting close as the laps wound down.

Race two was all about retribution for Jones as he came out swinging straight to the front and although he had heat from Corke he wasn’t to be denied. Casey dealt with the fast starting Jamie Huehnand settled in to a solid third but Max Corke kept him honest after taking a little longer to get past Kuehn.

Sunday saw a return to the race one result for Casey and Hucklebridge but not until they had dealt with a rapid Jones. Casey made the move at around half distance but it wasn’t until the final lap before Hucklebridge found a way through. Both the Corke boys had problems on the first lap both haemorrhaging places with the pack still tightly bunched. Kuehn held out from their charge back up the order and secured fourth behind Jones while George was back in the saddle quicker than Max and came back to fifth.

Max Corke got the jump on the pack in race 4 and with George on his case he put the rutted conditions to good use holding the prime lines. Casey had a battle royal with the other Corke going back and forth all the time allowing Max to build a gap which he held to the flag. Casey made his last pass stick for second while mid race Kuehn chucked away a solid fourth handing that over to Gordon briefly. Huck was climbing through from a not so great start and not long after Gordon had moved up a place he was back to fifth as the Husky rider went by.

The Auto class had some big ruts to negotiate following the big boys onto the circuit, but with a shortened course, they all did well in the conditions. Jensen King made his intentions clear setting a pace unrivalled by the rest. Cohen Llewellyn was solid in second but had lost time in the early laps to King that he couldn’t reel back. Eli Reynolds held third for most of the race, but coming through the pack at a rate of knots, both Jake Sayers and Jaxson Hooper made light work of Frankie Williams and Jesse Eyles. Hooper went on to pass Sayers just past the halfway mark and continued to wind up speed to catch Reynolds with two to go to take third.

Race two was like a fast carnival procession, with Llewllyn in front of King, answering his every move with more speed as the pair drew the crowd’s attention. King couldn’t find his way past and had to settle for runner-up. Hooper had the same issue with Sayers, as the pair, some twenty seconds back on the lead, mirrored their battle, Sayers taking third.

Race three had Llewellyn gating again with King in the wings trying to work out where a pass was to be made, but it wasn’t to be as Llewellyn was again in control and not going to be beaten. Sayers looked to have third wrapped up, but for the charge of Hooper coming past Reynolds and Eyles to catch Sayers on the final lap for third.

With the final race it really was follow my leader. Llewellyn got the holeshot and led from start to finish but had close company in an exciting showdown, with King both crossing the finish within two seconds! No one else had to fight for position in the top five as they were all spaced out (pardon the pun, moon, spaced).’

The Junior 65’s really had some action-packed racing. Ronan Watson was the first to mark his intentions with a gate to flag win. Tommy Wood was soon on the rear mudguard of Elliot Shawyer after demoting Jack Clark to fourth but couldn’t find a way through. Logan Lewis, Oaklan Winnall and George Hickinbottom all suffered terrible races after bad starts and falls. The question had to be asked as to how high up the order Tyler Peaty would have been had it not been for his terrible start and fall managing to get back to fourth at one point before getting re passed by Clark.

Watson controlled race two substantially quicker than his rivals. Wood got a great start but had no reply to the pace set at the front and came in second, a considerable distance in front of third-placed Forrest Roberts, who had taken Shawyer on the final lap, with Peaty taking another fifth.

Wood looked like notching up the win in the third race but made an error on the final lap, dropping him to third while Shawyer battled to hold off Watson for the win by a bike length. Riley Rogers held onto fourth after a great start while Winnall traded places with Lewis, both making up for first-race disasters.

Race four saw Wood put the blue bike out front and not look back with a superb wire-to-wire win. Shawyer had his hands full with Watson and succumbed on the final lap to the relentless pressure. Roberts took fourth while Blake Bracey took his best result in sixth behind Peaty.

Arthur Moore got off the mesh quickest in the first Small Wheel 85 race but was soon overcome by Harley Marczak, Tyler Rogers and Archie Butterfield, but he kept his composure and went back after Butterfield a lap later to retake third. Behind them, Arthur King and Nixon Coppins were in a heated battle. Coppins made two quick passes at two-thirds distance to move into fourth; about the same time, Moore retook Rogers to move back into the runner-up spot.

Marczak got off to a flyer, going unchallenged to take another win in race 2, but behind him, it was chaos as riders traded places quicker than Prime leaves the shelves! King held second for half the race but both Moore and Coppins came past on the same lap only for Moore to go down and King to re take Coppins then Rogers came past both into second while Coppins made another move on King for third. Butterworth claimed fifth and the last rider to benefit from Moore’s mishap.

Race three was a humdinger, a freight train of five riders all battling for position, with Moore initially in front getting passed by Rogers, who held the lead until a mistake with one to go! Marczak was initially in third but, in the chaos, dropped back to fifth behind King and Coppins but a quick re-pass on King before following Coppins for another lap. Then, as he passed the stricken Rogers, he grabbed his chance to Coppins and Moore on the final lap, taking another win!

The final race turned out to be Marczak’s downfall as a DNF while lying third on lap 2 put an end to his win streak. Coppins had the jump on the field, but Moore was all over him and soon passed into the lead on onto the win. Rogers battled his way past King and Coppins to finish second while King passed Coppins, only to be passed back a lap later. Archie Butterfield made hay while the sun shone with an excellent start, putting him inside the top three for a while, ending up fourth, just ahead of King.

The final group on the racetrack was the 85cc Big Wheels, and it was another group the crowd enjoyed watching. With only nine points separating the top four overall, it was anyone’s race each time they went on track. The dominance from round one by Jensen Severn looked set to continue as within two laps he was out front after passing Maison Jones. Oliver Burridge got off to a good start only to lose three places after a mid-race mistake dropping him to sixth Archie Stapley first to benefit moved into third but was soon passed by Zane Stephens then Danny Flude as he went on to pass Stephens as well before dropping back after a mistake allowing Stephens to take second and Jones third. Stapley the last to benefit from Flude’s error in fourth.

Race two didn’t see any changes at the sharp end with Flude taking the win narrowly from Jones and an even closer battle for third between Stephens and Severn as they crossed the line together. Will Evans held Travis Bixby at bay for fifth.

Race 3 had Severn back to the front but under pressure from Jones. Stephens was in close contention and Flude had had to come from yet another poor start to challenge in the latter stages for third with the fastest lap time. Lewys Morgan got off to a flyer but by halfway started to drop back finally finishing in eighth.
