Carpenter rules at Culham! 2025 Bridgestone British Masters Round 1 – Race Report & Results

The Bridgestone British Masters powered by Rock Oil kicked off the 2025 season in style as the riders and teams descended to Oxfordshire and the Culham venue for the weekend’s opening round.

A decidedly mixed weather forecast meant that track preparation was cautious, with much of the sand-based track sealed to prevent waterlogging. However, the feared snow and sleet were kept away, and spectators were treated to rather sunny weather. A bitterly cold wind ensured dry robes and paddock jackets were the order of the day.

The windy weather certainly kept the track dry, although, as is typical in such windswept conditions, the circuit ran with a dry, loose surface that allowed the riders to carry a lot of speed, albeit with some finesse on the throttle over some of the harsh acceleration bumps.

The Fix Auto UK Pro class saw a healthy entry of riders join the gate, and as the riders ventured onto a freshly graded circuit, it was the Crendon Tru7 Honda team rider Jamie Carpenter who immediately got to the front and set a benchmark time ahead of Jason Meara on the Moto Cycle Gas-Gas, and Phoenix Tools Fantic’s Carlton Husband.

Carpenter certainly looked the favourite as the gate dropped for moto one, however it was the SC Sportshomes Husqvarna of Charlie Putnam who grabbed the early lead from Josh Spinks (West London Triumph), as Carpenter went down on the opening lap. He was unhurt and quickly remounted, albeit in last place, as Spinks charged to the front, closely followed by Christopher Mills, making a welcome return to the series on his Mills Racing Yamaha.

Spinks began taking control of the race as Carpenter distantly fought through the midfield, with the main challenge appearing from Meara, who quickly got into the top five, getting past the fast starting Lewis Hall (LH419 Honda), Putnam, and Mills to quickly break into second place.

As the race entered its closing laps, Meara seemed to really find some pace, and quickly reeled in leader Spinks, who was beginning to feel the effects of arm pump “I haven’t raced since September so was starting to get a little race rusty towards the end”

Meara stormed through, to continue his good form carried over from the Scottish Motocross Championship, from there the victory was a foregone conclusion as he swept to victory by almost eight seconds, Carlton Husband getting past Lewis Hall to secure third.

However, the sub-plot of the race was Jamie Carpenter, who had crashed on the opening lap “I went down in the opening downhill and got going at the back, probably about 20 seconds down”

A tough race for Carpenter saw a particularly close battle with the Triumph mounted duo of Tyla Hooley and Bayliss Utting, the two Pro rookies giving a good account of themselves in the top 10.

Fifth at the flag represented a good comeback from Carpenter, but surely the overall would now be out of the question?

Nothing can ever be certain in motocross, and the result was soon turned on its head in moto two.

Dan Thornhill (Chambers KTM) blitzed the field to grab the holeshot, with Carpenter having a much better time as he pursued the KTM down the opening hill.

Behind him, there was soon trouble with an accident claiming first race winner Meara, along with Spinks and Hall.

Spinks was able to get going at the back of the pack and play catch up, with Meara close behind, however the Gas Gas rider had taken quite a hit and opted to circulate during the race and collect points.

Worse yet was Lewis Hall, who required medical attention, and whilst the injuries were not serious, a hit to the head and some bike damage meant he was out of the race, a real shame for the Honda Privateer after a strong showing in Moto One.

At the front, Thornhill made the early pace, with Carpenter settling into a rhythm to sweep through into the lead during the opening laps. Thornhill challenged, but Carpenter was able to maintain his strong form to take a comfortable win.

Christopher Mills settled in close behind the leaders initially until losing ground, much to his surprise, getting ambushed by Carlton Husband, who’d gradually closed from fourth position. This spurred Mills into a second wind, as he quickly got past Husband to secure third place. Ty Westcott had a strong ride to snatch fifth, whilst further back the recovering Josh Spinks was involved in a close Battle of Britain, with fellow Triumph riders Bayliss Utting and Tyla Hooley making life difficult until late into the race, Spinks eventually winning out to snatch fifth.

Carpenter, therefore, took the overall, and whilst he admitted to being “surprised” to have got the overall with a 5-1 score, he acknowledged it was a great demonstration of perseverance: “100% it shows why every position counts and there’s no point giving up. I’m pleased to get back into the rhythm of things after a few months off racing, I’m happy with the bike and looking forward to the rest of the season”

Carlton Husband hadn’t quite been able to match the race leaders, but nonetheless looked impressive on his new Fantic machine, the Phoenix Tools rider securing second overall. “The track was getting quite tough in the second moto; it was very fast, and with the square-edged bumps, it was tricky. I’m pleased with the result, the bike is getting there now, a few more days getting the suspension set right how we want it and we’ll be there”

For Josh Spinks, a potential win ended up with third overall, but it was nonetheless an encouraging show on the new Triumph “I had to come through after being collected on the first lap, managed to get it back to fifth. It’s a good start to the season and we can build from there”

Max Corke taking the first of two wins in MXY2

The opening round saw a huge entry of amateur and youth riders, the Masters proving yet again to be a real riders’ favourite with full gates in almost every class.

MXY2 kicked the action off, with Will Haddock taking the Fix Auto fastest qualifier award, however when the gate dropped it was Ollie Bubb who took the opening two wins, the second especially close as he snatched the win from Haddock by less than a knobbly tyre’s width in a dramatic finish.

Max Corke was on the periphery throughout, and he took a comfortable third race win, following up with a final race win to finish narrowly behind the overall winner Bubb, with Haddock close behind in third, just ahead of George Corke.

The 125cc class saw a close battle throughout the weekend between Charlie Richmond and Freddie Gardner, the two youth rivals continuing their battles into 2024 as, after an opening win from Richmond, Gardner took the second and final race wins to snatch the overall.

Matt Bayliss was one of the frontrunners last year and showed he would be a rider to be reckoned with as he took the third moto win, snatching third overall from Neville Bradshaw on his distinctive pink retro-coloured TM, and Chris Bayliss, constantly near the front, finishing just behind.

The only real negative in the 125cc class was a heavy accident for Robbie Daly in moto three, bringing out the red flag as he cartwheeled downhill on the opening lap, a broken femur meaning a period of recovery for the unfortunate Daly, who had shown some good speed in moto two.

Max Jones and Jimmy Ball both took a moto in the 65s; however, as Sunday rolled in, Harley-James Barrow emerged as the rider to beat, taking two strong moto wins to snatch the overall from Jones and Ball.

Alfie Cotter was unlucky to miss out on victory, a last-lap mistake costing him the second moto win, but he kept his composure to finish a solid fourth overall just ahead of Riley Rodgers.

The 85cc classes took place as the organisers responded to long-standing allegations of riders running oversized machines in the class.

Machines had their engine barrels marked prior to qualifying, ensuring the same engines were in place during the meeting. Additionally, one machine each from the Small Wheel and Big Wheel classes was selected for random post-race strip down and scrutineering, with both bikes found to be completely legal.

In the Small Wheel class, Jett Gardiner and Arthur King both took two motos each and tied on points. A tight final race saw the race win, and the overall result went the way of Gardiner. Teddy Merriman wasn’t quite on the pace of the leaders, but had his moments, and some strong, consistent finishes gave him a comfortable third overall.

A little further back, Remi Wigglesworth’s seventh overall saw him display plenty of fight and determination, winning the Carl Jones MX ‘Rider of the Weekend’ award.

Jenson King (16) powered to a best result of 17th in 65cc Juniors

The Big Wheel class saw Joel Winstanley Dawson take the opening two motos, as a fall for Ollie Waters in moto two forced him to fight through for seventh.

Waters fought back to take the third moto, but the result was truly turned on its head in the final. Winstanley-Dawson stopped abruptly on the final lap with mechanical issues, and Joel left to walk back to the paddock in despair as Waters took the overall.

Arthur Moore kept him honest all weekend, and his second overall gives indication he could be a title contender. The same could be said for Archie Stapley, who snatched the final moto to get third overall, whilst Cohen Jagielski, new to the class and having jumped straight up from the 65 class, seemed to gel with the bigger bike very quickly for fourth overall.

Amateur MX2 saw a very closely fought result, with Liam Bennett, Chester Hyde, Leon Williams and Harrison Greenough all taking wins. A fall in the second moto meant Greenough was unfortunate not to challenge for the overall, he took fifth, however only four points separated the top three, as Leon Williams took a narrow overall victory from Hyde and Bennett.

Fourth was a welcome returnee to the series, Zac Stealey. The former Kawasaki Masters and IMBA runner took a best result of second over the weekend.

Rob Wood was the rider to bear in Amateur MX1, taking three moto wins despite a close fight from Scott Aldridge, who kept Wood on his toes. Sebastian Berthiaume was unlucky to miss out on the chequered flag, but upon a strong third from the impressive Ben Knight, whilst fifth placed Seth Manners was the only rider to break Wood’s winning streak, grabbing the second moto win.

There would only be one clean-sweep winner over the weekend, that came in the last race class of the day, the Clubman.

Quite often a closely fought class, Elliott Pugh endured this would not be the case at Culham as he comfortably took all four wins.

Adam Hardy challenged at times but had to settle for second, just ahead of Matt Fuller and Ryan Christian, whilst 2024 runner-up Lee Clarkson had a good Sunday programme to take fifth.

With a busy opening round drawing to a close, plenty of riders were pleased with the event, and their championship aspirations. They only have a short period to reflect, however, as the series returns to Preston Docks on 5/6 April. The Lancashire sand circuit used to be a real rider favourite, so round two is hotly anticipated!
