Alderton on a mission at Smeatharpe! 2025 Badger Goss Trophy Scramble – Race Report and Results

Alderton on a mission at Smeatharpe! 2025 Badger Goss Trophy Scramble - Race Report and Results

On Easter Sunday, 20th April, the Devon Classic Scramble Club hosted its first event of 2025, the Badger Goss Trophy Scramble at Smeatharpe. A lot of rain had fallen a couple of days before the event, which was just what the doctor ordered, as with the Sun coming out early morning, the track was nigh on perfect, and with a big entry, it was to produce some good racing to be witnessed by the many spectators who were in attendance.

Race Report and Images by Dave Rich

In the Pre-60 class, it was Jeremy Lile on his 650 Trisba T110 who was to take the overall with a second and two wins with the 350 Velocette of Alfred Busby, who did win the opening race, taking second overall.

The Pre 65 under 350cc class saw a fine performance from the 350 Hickie Racing BSA with Colin Hickie on board who was to dominate all three races with Ian Baldock also on a 350 Hickie Racing BSA taking second overall with Kelvin Day making it a clean sweep for 350 BSA’s taking third overall, whereas in the over 350cc class it was the 610 Matchless of Steve Iles Jnr who was to take the overall with two wins and a second with Matt Fry on his 600 Jawa Cheney denying Iles a clean sweep of wins in the last one taking second overall and third overall went to Nick Thorne on his 500 Jawa.

In the Pre 68 category there was only going to be one winner and that was Luke Hickie on his 500 Hickie Racing BSA who was to dominate all three races with Nick Archer on a 475 BSA taking second overall with a hattrick of second place finishes and third overall went to the 441 BSA Mx of Kevin Willmer to yet again make it a 1 2 3 for BSA.

First lap action in the opening combined Classic race

In the Pre 74 under 250cc class there was to be three different race winners, but at the end of the day it was consistency that was to be the name of the game with Glenn Morgan on his 250 Cz with a 1-2-2 scorecard who took the overall from Steve Dagger on a 250 Cz Mx who did win the last race taking second overall and third overall went to the Oliver Thorne.

Nathan Jones giving his all in the Pre 74 over 250cc class

The Race 2 winner was Kevin Spencer on his 250 Cr Honda, who was tied on points for the overall going into the last race. Still, unfortunately for Kevin, he was a nonstarter in the last race, which was to drop him down the standings, and finished eighth overall. Still, in the Pre 74 over 250cc class it was Nathan Jones on his 400 Husqvarna who took the top spot on the podium only to be denied a clean sweep of wins in the second race by the 380 Cz of Neil Aldridge who ended the day second overall ahead of Chris Elderfield on his 360 Bultaco Pursang with three consistant rides taking third overall.

In the Pre 78 class it was Kevin Spencer who won the opening race on his 250 Maico from Simon Chamberlain on his 250 Kx Kawasaki but there was only one winner in the other two races and that was Chamberlain who with it took the overall from Spencer with Colin Ayles on his 250 Maico taking third overall.

The Twinshock A class was fast and furious and saw some good battles in all three races. In the opening race it was Kristian Marshall who was out on a 400 RM Suzuki who led early doors but was soon to be caught by the 490 Maico of Jack Alderton who was on a mission and on lap two managed to get pass Marshall to take the lead and from that point he didn’t look back and took the opening race win. The second race was nigh on a carbon copy of the opening race with Marshall leading for the opening lap from Alderton but by the end of the second lap Alderton had found away pass Marshall and a gain went on untroubled to take the win.

In the last race Marshall was out on his old faithful 480 Maico, but it wasn’t such a good start for him in this race nor Alderton who were both mid pack, but at the front was the 500 Honda of Marcus Clare who had Ryan Hooper all over him on his 490 Maico who was soon to be joined by George Bowerman on his 465 Yz Yamaha to make it a three way battle at the front. Clare, though, held on to take the win from Hooper, who just took second by literally two hundredths of a second from Bowerman, who came on strong on the last lap. Marshall came home in fourth with Alderton fifth, which was enough to give Alderton the overall from Marshall, with Hooper ending the day third overall.

Ben Dyer showed his class in the Twinshock B class with a clean sweep of wins

In the Twinshock B class there was some good racing between Jonny Orchard on his 250 Yz Yamaha and the big 604 KTM of Ben Dyer and Andrew Batten on his 250 CR Honda who was to be quick off the line and would have the early lead in two of the races before being caught and passed by Orchard and Dyer within the first couple of laps. Dyer was in fine form and was all over Orchard and pressed for the lead in all three races, which he did, but Orchard was to stay with him and came back at him, especially in the opening race, where Dyer just managed to hold him off and took the win by literally a second. There was no stopping Dyer in the other two races, who made it a hattrick of wins to take the overall from Orchard, with three second place finishes, and third overall went to Batten, with three third place finishes.

First lap action in the combined Twinshock B & C class

The Twinshock C class was also good to watch and with it produced three different race winners with Richard Cross on his 430 CR Husqvarna winning the opening race, Adrian Dark on his 490 Yz Yamaha was triumphant in the second moto and winner of the last race was Adrian Bence on the 440 Maico MC but at the end of the day consistency was the winner and that was Dark with a scorecard of 2-1-3 was to give him the overall but with Bence and Cross tied on points second overall was decided by virtue of the better result in the last race and that was Bence.

Robert Coleman was consistent in the Twinshock D class and took the overall without winning a race

In the Twinshock D class it was Martin Foster on his 250 Maico Mega 2 who was to win the opening race with the other two races being won by Jack Pellow on his 400 RM Suzuki but none of these winners ended up on the podium as consistency again sorted the top three out with the 250 CR Honda Red Rocket of Robert Coleman taking the overall from the 560 KTM of Josh Church with third overall going to the 465 Yz Yamaha of Clifford Stone.

The Twinshock D1 class was also very competitive and was to produce three different winners in the shape of Shane White, Blake Winston and Alan Payne which at the end of the third race saw both White and Winston tied on points but with Winston beating White in the last race he took the overall with third overall going to Christopher Smejkal.

No 199 Shane White holding off No 526 Kevin Pettit in the Twinshock D1 class

In the Twinshock E class it was to all go down to the last race as both Cameron Butler and Laurence Ball had taken a win and a second each, but unfortunately in the last race Ball had a problem with his bike and picked up a Dnf which left Butler who did take the win and with it the overall, Roy Harmer took second overall with three good results and third overall went to Dale Hancock.

Mia Milsom was unstoppable in the Ladies class and took a hat-trick of wins

The Ladies class was to see a fine performance from Mia Milsom on her CR 125 Honda who was to take a clean sweep of wins to give her the overall from Paige Carby who rode her 125 RM Suzuki to a hattrick of second place finishes to give her second overall and third overall was to go to Joanne Ball on her 125 XL Honda.

In the Novice class it looked as if Tom Plume was going to walk away with the overall after winning the opening two races on his 500 Husqvarna, but Tom was a nonstarter in the last race which was won by Geoffrey Brown who with two other good results took the overall, second overall went to Richard Clarke and third overall was Mike Jones.
