Round 4 of the 6-round series took the Apico BSMA national to the gruelling sandy Oxfordshire circuit of Culham. The pace was something out of a Fast and Furious movie with some top wildcard riders making an appearance ahead of another meeting next weekend.

The mixed Senior class were treated to a perfectly prepared surface both days. McKenzie Marshall would have been untouchable in all his races had he and Kia Reason not collected each other in turn two as they both went for the same piece of real estate – both the #555’s going down with Marshall last away by half a lap! Morgan Walters took advantage taking the 250f win but it was the 125 of Oliver Ruddock who crossed the line first, with Levi Davies and Charlie Hucklebridge just holding on ahead of the charging Marshall. Marshall annihilated the field from there on in, Walters and Davies only had 2 points separating them in the chase for podium pie and likewise, Tristan Daniels got the better of equal points scoring James Rowsell by virtue of his higher placed finish over the weekend. Ruddock took a maximum in the 125’s 22 points clear of nearest rival and first-time podium finisher Alfie Smith with a close call for third between Daniel Wood and Ayjay Simpson. Jamie Kuehn looked a little out of sorts claiming 5th.
Mx1 looked to be a foregone conclusion as Corey Hockey took his two-stroke to 4 out of 4 without putting a wheel wrong but Ryan Voase got closest in moto 2 keeping the pressure on till the flag. The battle for second was intense as Voase and Charlie Way locked bars and had Steve Bixby not taken a hard fall in moto 2 that could have been a three-way as it was Bixby pushing Voase in moto 1 for second. Josh Greedy had a lonely weekend with 4th overall being just off the lead group but with no challenges from the pair behind of Jake Strange and Thomas O’Connor.
MX2 saw a surprise pole in qualifying for Harvey James, less than 2 hundredths quicker than Alfie Jones. Jones only there on Saturday blitzed the competition with 2 wins giving a masterclass to the watching crowd. James couldn’t match his qualification performance after showing some great speed, numerous times giving Adam Harris, the championship leader, a tough time, but lack of energy due to a week in bed sapped his levels as he faded back from great starts. Josh Taylor clung onto the roost of Jones on Saturday and after taking runner-up on both occasions looked set for the overall, but Harris stepped up his game after following Taylor home on Saturday.
The overnight rain gave the track a different feel for Sunday seemingly suiting Harris and his Fantic smoker all the better as an exciting trio of Harris Danny Rapson and Taylor could have been covered with a race mat! Rapson too looked to favour Sundays going after only managing 6-10 finishes on the previous day. James was initially in on the action but after several soil samples dropped out of the furious pace. Consistent racing put Connor Jago in 4th overall ahead of Finn Eddy and the Josh’s of Talbot and Jones. The screaming 125 of Liam Gale would have been inside the top 5 had he not DNF’d the first moto rounding out the final 3 motos with a 6-5-6 scorecard.
The Vet’s action was dominated by the over 35 championship leader, Jamie Dobson taking 4 straight wins without much hassle from the rest of the combined field. Gian Sivori looked to be throwing down some hot laps in qualifying and certainly came out swinging in moto 1 with a win in the over 45’s following Dobson home a not-to-distant 10 seconds behind but took no further part after possibly being involved in a red flag incident in moto 2 – handing over the baton to Simon Bonzer. But Bonzer made a mess of moto 2 allowing Richard Green to put his Tech 7’s in the door for the overall. Bryan Tucker got in on the action with a great start to the weekend grabbing a second in moto2, with 9th in the race, setting him up for a solid 3rd overall ahead of Mark Bonning on the evo 125 Honda, Darren Hansford and Brian Grimes, with consistency rewarding him with 6th. At the front of the field, Sam Callow was unchallenged for 2nd just needing to find another few seconds a lap to get on terms with Dobson. Wildcard enduro rider Tom White found the sandy going to his liking as he ran consistently up front rewarding him with 3rd overall in the 35’s with James Jackaman running well for 4th. Sean Kettlewell benefited from Ian James’s playing with his bucket and spade but both were lucky to have not been knocked back a place after William Ell rang his bell in the final moto, cross rutting along the bottom straight.
Small wheel wildcard rider Alfie Geddes-Green obliterated the field with a superb show of riding. Untroubled all weekend with a qualification time that would have placed him inside the top 5 in the big wheel! A distraught Jensen Severn was robbed of 2nd overall after snapping a chain in the third moto. Travis Bixby capitalised on Severn’s misfortune and the inconsistency of most of the top runners as he got away with his bad result in moto 3 for 2nd overall. Ollie Jewitt suffered the same misfortune in the final moto and having run 2nd to Geddes-Green in moto2. Harley O’Callaghan had some great races but a DNF took him out of contention while Marley Alder’s lap times should have put him on the podium but a race 1 9th dropped him down. Archie Congdon gelled with the track better on Sunday but his efforts the previous day placed him 7th overall ahead of Elvis Totney and Severn. Maison Jones’s poor first race left him trailing behind Finlay Stead.
The Junior racing went Arthur Moore’s way taking 4 out of 4 with some tough battles in the early going but his superior speed forged him to the front for a well-deserved win. William Dennis was looking set for a great 2nd overall after Saturday beating championship rival Cohen Jagielski but he had close company both outings from Jett Gardiner, who kept up his run of 3rd place and finished all weekend to take the second step. Jagielski didn’t look himself on Saturday and Sunday turned it around to take second in both motos saving his weekend with a 4th overall. Dennis only gained 3 points on his rival. Harry Cuddy took his blu cru machine to 5th with a best result of 4th in the final moto Arthur King managed to beat Tommie Perfect in the tie break for 6th with his higher placed finishes.
Tommy Wood’s unbroken win streak came to an end on Saturday after taking more than his fair share of soil samples in the first moto, but he bounced back as strong as ever to take the other 3 moto wins. Charley Wilcock took his first win of the series and was the only rider to be able to say he’s won a race this season in the championship hunt. From there on in he had to settle for bridesmaid which after qualifying in only 7th to take the overall must have been jubilant. Freddy Graham put in a great first moto 2nd which proved invaluable to keep the 2nd step on the podium as Wood ended up a solitary point behind. Austin Edwards 6th overall could have been so much more after bringing home two third-place finishes but it wasn’t to be as Mason Staddon took advantage of Sony Saunders poor 3rd moto to tie up 4th.
The Big wheel 85’s provided what was possibly the fiercest battles of the weekend. Top gun in the class was wildcard Charlie Richmond with teammate Freddie Gardiner running a 1-2 in both of Saturday’s motos but Gardiner DNF’d the final moto dropping him out of contention. It wasn’t a whitewash by team Gardiner MX by any means as those first two motos had some big punchers all trading places with Chester Hyde, Ollie Bubb, Brandon Hedayat and Drew Stock all mixing it up with championship rivals Kai Thorpe and Riley Voase. Drew Stock took the better of Ollie Bubb in the first but Bubb pulled a 2nd out of the hat in the final moto to secure 2nd overall ahead of Hyde whose best result of 3rd in the 2nd moto kept him on the podium. Stock missed out due to a 9th and only managed 4th overall while Thorpe’s excellent final moto 3rd kept him in the top 5.
