Mac on the Attack! UK EVO MX Non Championship Meeting – Race Report & Results

Back on Sunday April 11th the Uk Evo Mx team headed to North Nibley in Gloucestershire for what originally was going to be the opening round of the 2021 series, but due to restrictions still in place and no camping the organisers decided to run the meeting as a non-championship round.

The track had been watered the night before as things would have been a bit dry, but overnight there was also a couple of heavy showers which made things a bit slippery for practice, but once racing got underway the track was prime and produced some good racing for some 200 plus riders.

In the Evo 125 class as with other years, the field was stacked with talent and the racing was close in all three races and it turned in to a battle of the CR125’s. In the opening race, it was Elliot Barrs who initially led, but this was short-lived as Tom Church sneaked through at the second corner with Brett Revell there in third. Revell was put under pressure within half a lap from John May who managed to get pass Revell by the end of the opening lap who was soon chasing the leading two. Barrs was trying to catch Church for a couple of laps but he had to soon be on the defensive as May was closing in all the time and as the last lap flag was shown May was all over Barrs, but Barrs who is no slouch held his nerve and took second behind Church with May literally less than half a second behind Barrs taking third.

In the second moto, this time Barrs made it stick at the front from May with Tom Moore tucked in third just ahead of Church who was all over Moore on the opening lap and managed to get past. Barrs was absolutely flying at the front in this one and had a clear lead within 2 laps, but the battle was on behind him between May and Church who was breathing all over May as they entered the last lap and a slight mistake from May exiting a righthander was all Church needed to pounce and he was to take second behind runaway winner Barrs with May again third. In the last 125 race, it was May this time who led momentarily but again Church entering the second corner nipped into the lead and from there was to go on untroubled to take the win by some 13 seconds from May with Barrs clinching third.

The opening Evo 250 class race saw the YZ Yamaha of James Kensington with the early lead from the CR Honda of Brett Hillman with Ben Milward also on a YZ Yamaha tucked in third but Milward was not hanging about and passed both Hillman and Kensington on the opening lap and was soon to ease away at the front. Kensington and Hillman were having a real tussle in 2nd and third with Hillman being shut out by Kensington every time he tried to get past until on the last lap Hillman got the better traction and sneaked through and was to take 2nd with Kensington a close third.

In moto 2 it was a bit of a precession once Milward got past Hillman on the opening lap with Milward going on to take the win from Hillman with Kensington third. In the last moto, Milward hit the front from the off from Kensington with the KX Kawasaki of Jake Chamberlain this time in third just ahead of Hillman who soon move up into 3rd passing Chamberlain and was chasing down Kensington who he caught and passed towards the end of the second lap, but he was not going to catch Milward who made it a hat-trick of wins.

In the Evo 500 class, it looked as if it was going to be a clean sweep for the BNH Triumph 545 of Lewis Trickett who dominated the opening two races and was leading the last moto, but as he entered the second lap his back break seized on and he was to stop which gifted the lead to George Gough on the KX 500 who had to shake off fellow KX 500 rider James Price as he had in the other two races to go on to take the win and with it gave him the overall on the day.

In the Super Evo’s under 45 class, there was a surprise entry from former GP and British Championship rider Scotsman Billy MacKenzie who was out on his CR 500. In the opening race, it was former South West Champion Welshman Andrew Gillett on the KX 500 with the best start from MacKenzie who took over the lead by the end of the first lap and looked to be enjoying himself at the front, but he could not afford any mistakes as Gillett stayed with him for several laps before a touch of arm pump set in and this was to hamper Gillett who was soon under pressure from the KX 250 of Jordan Carter who came on strong in the closing stages, but Gillett held on to take second behind MacKenzie.

In moto 2 it looked as if Gillett was going to holeshot this one, but he had a bit too much speed and ran wide and through on the inside sneaked the Scotsman who again had to be at his best as Gillett was within a couple of seconds of him all through the race. Carter managed to come home in third again, but he was involved in a real tussle with Luke Hill mid-race. In the last moto, this time MacKenzie got it spot on and hit the front from the off, but as with race 2 he was not to get away too much from Gillett nor Carter who this time was pushing Gillett, but it was to no avail as MacKenzie took the win by 3 seconds from Gillett with Carter a close third.

The Super Evo over 45 class saw Laurence Wiltshire power his CR 250 to a hattrick of wins with some fast riding with Simon Dearing taking 2nd in all three races to take 2nd overall and Steve Wells on the KX 500 with three consistent rides taking a well-deserved third overall.

In the Vets Evo over 45 class Brian Wheeler showed why he rides with that no 1 plate as he was to take a clean sweep of wins, but there was a good ride from Phil Lewis on the YZ 250 who took a hattrick of 2nd places, but it was not plain sailing for the Dorset rider as he had to work hard especially in the second moto after a moderate start.

The Twinshock 4-Stroke class saw some good riding with the 510 Husqvarna of James Humphrey winning the opening race with fellow 510 Husqvarna rider Dugald Cullen winning the other two races, but it was Humphrey with two seconds to Cullen who took the overall.

In the Twinshock under 50’s class, it was Richard Benham on the CR 250 who was on top form notching up a hattrick of wins with Ryan Baker and James Reeves both scoring consistently in the opening two races tying on points going into the last race with Baker finishing in 2nd ahead of Reeves who finished 3rd which gave Baker second overall and Reeves third overall.

The Twinshock over 50 class saw probably one of the fastest riders on a 490 Maico in the shape of Terry House in action but it was not the best of starts for House, but it was for Kevin Reed on the RM 500 who led from Kelvin Tatum also on a RM 500, but Tatum’s race was over before the end of the opening lap with a mechanical problem. House by the end of lap 2 was up into 2nd and was closing on Reed until House picked up a rear wheel puncture and he was later to pull out and Reed went on to take a comfortable win. In the other two races, there was no stopping House who notched up both wins from Reed who was to take the overall.

In the Modern 2-Stroke under 50 class, we saw Billy MacKenzie win the opening race in style but Billy didn’t race the other two races which were won by Tony Griffiths on the YZ 250 and with his 2nd in the opening race to MacKenzie he took the overall whereas in the over 50 modern 2-Stroke class it was the 250 KTM of Chris Pritchett who took the overall with two wins and a second with Anthony Tanner on the 250 Husqvarna denying Pritchett a clean sweep of wins by half a second in the second race.
