In the Youth Championship, there was great racing from tomorrow’s stars in all of the classes.
The Autos and Cadets, the youngest riders, put on some brilliant racing. Their day started off with a nasty-looking spill as four of them hurtled into the corner together on lap 3. It was local wins for Jacob Penfold and Leo Sturgeon. Both riders compete in several disciplines of motorsport but are from Grasstrack families.
The ultra-competitive Junior class saw a fine win, and a fifth British title, for Cooper Rushen. He and Archie Rolph won their first three races and Rushen had to beat Rolph when they met in the final heat which he did. In-form Wincanton youngster Zak Batey rode consistently well all day to claim 3rd.
The Intermediate class saw Cameron Taylor defend his crown in emphatic style. It was not plain sailing for Taylor, however, who was being led by Max Perry in the deciding heat when Perry dropped the machine, losing the title in the process. Heartbreak for Perry, but jubilation for Taylor who now looks towards the British Adult 250cc Championships in two weeks time.
‘Super’ Sam Norris returned to action and, although he had some ups and downs, his finished his day in fine form with a win.
The GT140 class provided entertaining support for the youth racers. Another local rider, Chris Still, took three wins out of three and then duly won the final comfortably. The usual clamber for minor places took place throughout the final.
Sundays Summer spectacular event looked set for a tremendous day’s racing after practice, with several riders looking incredibly fast.
However, just as practice ended the heavens opened and torrential rain left the circuit underwater. After some time and track alterations, a leg of racing was achieved, with an incredible effort from the riders that chose to race.
Results were declared after the completion of the first leg…not ideal, but given the efforts of the riders, it seems fitting to announce the results of these riders on the day.
